In market for boat, need advice for towing!

As some mentioned, you might want to figure out if your truck is enabled for "Tow/Haul" mode. It wasn't standard until 2012. That will tell your truck to change its shifting points, use more engine braking, and stay in the sweet spot for maximum torque.

Do you know what your gear ratio is? As others said it will affect tow rating but will also affect your truck's ability to deal with inclines and hills, and whether or not your tranny will be constantly searching for the right gear - i.e. killing your transmission. Generally the shorter gears like the 3.92 are better for towing and taller gears such as the 3.21 and 3.55 are better for fuel mileage. I've got 3.21 gears in my 2015 but it's also got the 8-speed transmission so it's able to handle the loads better than a 6-speed.

I'd say that you'll be fine for shorter, flat trips but will want to investigate things more if your truck is maxing out with this boat. I assume that this boat/trailer will have trailer brakes so you'll need to either have a brake controller in your truck or install and aftermarket one. A 5,000-6,000 pound boat will absolutely 100% push your truck around in an emergency stopping situation.

Tow haul wasn't standard until 2012? Every 4th Gen I've seen had it. 2009 and up.

And most boat trailers are surge brakes - no controllers. I tow 5-6K with mine, the truck itself weighs right around 6K full of fuel.

Thanks for the input oldjeep. The dodge website says my truck can haul over 9000lbs. But I was worried that continual hauling of this boat would wear out my tranny over time. I plan on taking the boat out every other weekend this summer from boat storage to the ramp.

Install a transmission fluid temp gauge in your truck like the ScanGauge I use. You will come to see what is normal and what isn't. If it pulls without getting too hot then I wouldn't worry. If it does get overly hot you can always reinstall the gauge in your next truck. I've got mine mounted just above my rear view mirror. it plugs into the OBD port found on every car and truck.

I expect to see temps between 135-160 with no tow load, depending on ambient air temp and speed. Pulling my boat, even in the summer, has never displayed anything over 175 or so.

There is tremendous piece of mind in KNOWING how hot your transmission is running; it's the difference between worrying and not worrying.

The 09 and up Dodges like what both the OP and I have already show trans temp on the digital information center, along with oil temp, coolant temp, oil pressure and a bunch of other stuff.

BTW up to 100* over ambient temp is normal.... It may be much lower but if it's 95* outside and it reads 195* there is no cause for concern... Just keep going as long as it isn't still climbing.
