In need of more info on my Mariner 5hp!!!

I recently obtained a mariner 5 hp from a buddy, he says it needs a new lower unit. I have the old one and it needs replacing, i can take photos of it at a later time but I've looked long online and could only find one on eBay for sale,.. but it already sold.
I have photos of the serial #, just cannot figure it out totally, if its 6E3-133966 or just s133966.
Anyways. Just trying to figure these things out.
I was told its a 5 hp and i know it has good compression and that is all.
I've looked up the serial # on several links already

without luck... but i could also be entering it in wrong so that could be my issue as well.
If someone could lead me in the correct direction i would very much appreciate it!!!!!

Your serial number is coming up as a 1981 short shaft MARINER SANSHIN 5 M model number 7005201. Here's your parts catalog for it, 6E3-102151 AND UP

If made in Japan, it's basically a rebadged Tohatsu 5 HP model. Why would you need to change a complete lower gear case, are lower gears shot, kaput ? there's the possibility to change damaged lower gears as opposed to buying a new lower leg, but hand labor cost will probably kill the cost of replacing gears.

That's a Yamaha built motor good luck finding parts for it. They are rare and mercury is not great about carrying parts for them. You are probably going to need to find a used one look at outboard salvage yards.

I'll post a photo of what I have of the lower unit tomorrow, but don't have any bolts/nuts to put it back together

Yep, Flyingscot is right, it's a rebadged 5 HP Yam, the postest pic didn't show clearly the gear lever shape, that's why the confusion. I actually have one same as yours, needs lots of spare parts. Preffered to buy a new 2 strokes 5 HP Tohatsu instead. You can find parts for it in boatsdotnet under Yamaha parts, son't know if all though. 2 strokes Yams are still under current production, not available in countries that have banned 2 strokes OB's.

Preffered to buy a new 2 strokes 5 HP Tohatsu instead. You can find parts for it in boatsdotnet under Yamaha parts, son't know if all though. 2 strokes Yams are still under current production, not available in countries that have banned 2 strokes OB's.

The reason you can't find a new gear housing and Mercury don't carry them any longer is because that engine ceased production over 30 years ago. Mercury do still carry some parts for it, so depending on what you need it may be repairable. I was able to source enough parts from Mercury and from various bearing suppliers locally to rebuild a 1984 15hp a couple of years ago. As long as the housing itself and the gears are in good condition, you stand a chance. Merc do still carry impellers and gaskets etc,

But please, don't blame the manufacturer for not having a full range of spare for something 35 years old. I seriously doubt Ford or GM would hold all the panels etc for cars they stopped making 30 years ago.

You also have the option of trying to get the parts from a Yamaha dealer too. But don't hold your breath, 35 years old, remember that.
