in need of operating instructions.

i have a 1959 evinrude 18hp fastwin,but i cant get it to start,i beleive i need the operating instructions because the motor has a switches that i dont know how to adjust and they dont say antthing on them.it has fire and compression.

Does fire jump a 7/16" gap? It ought to be capable on both leads if the system is healthy. Also make sure the magneto plate up underneath the flywheel turns as you advance the throttle.<br /><br />Next to consider is fuel. You can bypass the whole fuel system by mixing some 24:1 (correct mix for you) and putting it in a spray bottle, and then spraying a little down the carb's throat and try starting it.<br /><br />The '59 fastwin came with the dual-line pressurised tank setup. Do you have that or has it been converted to a fuel pump, and single line system? If it's a pressurised system, then you must close the tank vent, and prime the system with the primer on the tank. You can remove the little brass slot screw from the bottom of the bottom of the carb's bowl to prove that fuel is getting to the carb. That screw is the carb's drain.<br />Then you close the choke, advance the throttle to 'Start', and pull the pull start.<br /><br />Joe Reeves explains about the mixture controls in this thread. <br /><br />Hope this gets you started!

Paul,do you really get 7/16" spark from these older ignitions?I never can,and let it go at 1/8".<br />DHP
