I read in the West Marine catalog the a transducer can be mounted the hull using either epoxy OR silicone. Has anyone used a silicone adhesive to do this? Which one? I don't mind using epoxy but not sure how the transducer would ever be removed.

I used Silicone on mine and it works very well. I used white silicone I had around the house and the only problem I had is that after a week it had not quite dried and there was an air bubble so I wasn't getting a reading. I pulled it out and mixed the wet silicone with my finger and it worked fine. I believe it's dry now.

My transducer is in a 5" PVC ring that is siliconed to the hull with about 1" of silicone inside the ring and it works very well.

I personally wouldn't use silicon to mount a transducer. You're using a lot of signal shooting though the hull let alone put an additional layer of a soft, sound absorbing material like silicon. Epoxy is sometimes used because it?s hard and transfers sound quite efficiently.

If you want the possible performance you?ll need to go with the tank/ liquid solution. I made a tank using a piece of 4? PVC and a rubber end cap. I used castor oil as a media and the performance on that unit was exceptional.
