inconsistent water flow on old evinrude

i recently bought a 7.5 hp evinrude. it seemed to run o.k. the first few times trolling . the last time out i noticed it was getting hot so i looked and saw no watter being pumped out to cool it. i turned the moter off and re started it. water then was being pumped out only to stop again a minute later. i revved up the motor and saw water pump out and it would continue to do so untill i idle it down to troll. when i bought this used motor the guy didnt know the exact year but did say it was in the 60's. any suggestions will help. thanks

steeliebug,<br /><br />If you do not know the condition of the water pump, it's time to replace it. It's not that hard, with a manual. They are available, on this site-bottom of page.

if you give us the model number off the tag on the side of the motor, we can tell you what year it is, i agree time for a new water pump

This would be a 50's era engine, give us a model number.
