Re: Indecent Proposal

I wouldn't do it in today's litigious world, where no one seems to take responsibility for themselves. And having insurance means nothing IMO. You cant predict what others will do, so why should you risk everything you own to let perfect strangers enjoy the day. Call me mean, but with judges today, you could loose your shirt, because you tried to be nice?

I wouldn't have taken them either. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. I've see it first hand on multiple occasions so no more. Plus... get your own boat and towable.
Insurance does only take a quick phone call. If you have any assets, you need to get liability insurance. At least for us the $150 I pay per year for my boat is a fair price for transferring the liability and property risk to a large insurance company.

Re: Indecent Proposal

Well my first instinctual response was, yes I'll take you guys for a ride, no I wont' accept any $ and had my wife and her friend not been already on the tube I would have had them out and about, of course not going buck wild like i did with my wife..
but the ride around the lake had me thinking and the thought of being implicated in any sort of lawsuit or other disaster got the best of me.....

on a side not, my dumbass drug the skeg on the boat ramp for about 3' while pulling the trailer out..
damn it.. usually my OCD/ADD is pretty good and i go though a mental check list with the boat...
LOL....

Yes, i'll be getting her insured ASAP.... and i really do feel bad that our society has gotten to this point where I would have been more than happy to share in the fun... but I had reservations because of all the lawsuits I hear all about...

Re: Indecent Proposal

I stand by my decision.

I have the ability to READ people and their intentions. Mrs. Fleetwin-not so much. I would not have been succesful without the ability to do so. It's work. That is something lost on MOST,not all, people under the age of 30.

I raised and taught two sons that have the same ability. Both are succesful in their endeavors.

With all that said, I think there are people out there that are for the most part honest. It's becoming less and less, but there are still SOME.

It's a judgement call and we all have the right to judge another person, on personal contact, without being judged by others. That ability to judge is being eroded. One bite at a time.

Personally, I use the internet, text and email to communicate with others but nothing replaces personal contact.

Dinosaur signing off.

Yep half of us seem to want something for nothing. Lot's of people drag their skeg at some point. It's not if it's when.

I echo what HomeCookin said regarding taking payment (even if only $5 for gas prior to the ride). At that moment, you become "for hire" and regardless of whatever PERSONAL insurance a person has, unless they are insured as a charter boat, that insurance goes out the window....and with it your home....savings...etc.

Am i overreacting to the what-ifs... or did i make a smart decision in protecting myself and family from who-knows-what...
Yes and Yes. You made a smart decision based on the insurance thing, but in the end....come on. Take them for a fun ride and enjoy being one of those good guys that can still enjoy life without worrying about all of the little things. IMO - that's why we have insurance these days, so that you can still say yes and not worry.

Life is more enjoyable when you make yourself and others around you happy. We all make the world that we live in.

I wouldn't do it. Today, everyone thinks they're owed something, and the days of generosity are gone. If someone can do something to get themselves ahead in life, they'll do it, even if that means tearing your life apart.

Re: Indecent Proposal

I had a situation occur that might contribute to why I changed my mind.

I had a long term employee who's personal life was falling apart, her husband left her, her kids deserted her, dad was dying, she had to move into an apartment and her husband wouldn't give her any furniture... yada yada yada, long story short she worked for me for over 8 years, we treated her like family. She was not an ideal employee and I really wanted to fire her on SEVERAL occasions but i didnt because i felt bad for her situation, she also had a new born...

she was the type of employee that would always sit on the job and have other employees join her....
a few weeks before the incident, she stated she tripped over a brick and hurt her back at her new apt while moving some furniture.

Well towards the end of december it was a thursday evening, we are closing and she leaves with a trash bag full of old clothes, and on camera from every angle as i have literally a thousand cameras in my store, you could see her twirling around with the bag in her hand.

the next day i hear that she is in the hospital and that she hurt her back at work.
we go visit her and her friend scolds us that we over work her and force her to carry heavy items... wtf, she never even works! lol

a week later we get a letter from her attorney and she is suing us..
the lady we have helped through her roughest times and invited my wedding, son's baptism... always forgave her for coming late or missing days......

anyhow, workmans comp took care of it and since i have close to a year of video surveillance back up they were able to determine that she did not sustain her injuries at work.....

but WHAT A NIGHTMARE.....

Re: Indecent Proposal

WOW that sucks sounds like she got desperate and was looking for a way to ease things up on herself. She must have figured it was an easy target.

I must be of a dieing breed. My 8 year old sons school bus driver was being a **** (on video) and slammed on the breaks for no real reason causing my son to hit his head giving him a concussion. Outside of a LOT of "aggressive discussions" with the school I basically only asked for his medical payments to be paid by their insurance.

I hate scammers and dishonest people. WC and disability fraud seem to have been on the uptick for a long time now. Shame seems to have gone by the wayside and people are fine with living meager existences even if they get away with their fraud.

Yup, that is why i'm a bit of a nut case when it comes to surveillance systems..
i have over 40 cameras in my 18,000 sqft store
i have 16 cameras on my house
i have a dash cam in all of my vehicles...
and no i'm not crazy or paranoid, i just like to have piece of mind.
The cctv system i got from costco, it's really sweet in that i can also watch live from my cell phone.

Love the Bundy's... what logic flow do you not agree with? Having CCTV cameras as a piece of mind?

Note to self:

Out.

LOL... All the camera's are Outside....

My point was that by having all the cameras I was able to demonstrate that my employee did not sustain any work related injuries during her time of employment... saved me & the WC a lot of $$

Now only if i can mount some cameras on my boat.. then i can give everyone worry free rides :D

Re: Indecent Proposal

Jeez, I'm pretty glad I live in a place where the "sue anyone" isn't around...I got sued once here in canada, and they lost....they ended up paying me, my lawyer, the court, their lawyer...

One would think that a sport with inherent risk involved, after watching you tow others, the warnings about death on the tube, they ASKED to go for a ride, and the fact that it's a high speed water sport, would free you of any sort of culpability..:( not in today's greedy world...

The wife must not have been hot wearing a skimpy bikini. With a title like indecent proposal, I was waiting for the interesting twist..
