hold on cowboy...
they are and have been allies of the US for a
long time. we have a V.good relationship with
their gov't.
they just don't want any of our service people
put in a dangerous situation.
Indonesia is one of the largest muslim countries
in the world and they have their own version of
radical muslim extremists.

I think it's smart of them to be concerned with
the safety of our troops.

yet another negative media spin story is all.

spot on EE. I say if they don't want us there, let's go somewhere else that might.

We are the USA, we don't cull none of them.
Except people here at home that could use some help.

I heard that one reason was that our Navy was conducting war game maneuvers in Indo water boundaries. They did not like that.

Yeah I heard they didn't want the American planes in their airspace, we had to ship out the USS Abraham Lincoln because they didn't want it in their waters....

no, they were worried about another SS Cole
possibility. they have also put armed indo
officers on every plane and helicopter.

think of it this way, if our troops aren't
armed, there is no way for the radicals to
justify attacking them. if they were armed,
they could claim the us attacked them etc...

I knew this would happen.

Guys, Indonesia is not our friend. Their goverernment pretends to be, but is not. Thailand and the Phillipines are our only allies in the area.

Why dont we let the beloved UN do this? Hmmm... oh yea, there are no UN troops, it is all USA.

Ken

That is a true fact EE. FOX NEWS reported that this morning.

That makes their job that more difficult and dangerous.

In Canada we sent are DART TEAM [ drinking beerplaying darts]to Thailand to help a friendly nation get back on their feet ,the US choose to help out where help was needed without a polical boundary which is very nice but they could also be learning more of the antic's of that nation as well

Reporter's Notebook: What They Have Lost
Wednesday, January 12, 2005
By Adam Housley

KHAO LAK, Thailand — More than two weeks since an earthquake and massive tsunami smashed the coastlines of South Asia, at least part of the relief effort is being hampered by the war for people's minds and beliefs.

Some hard-line Islamic clerics have preached that the tsunami was sent because people didn't follow the law of God. Aid workers have been warned not to venture into outlying areas in Sumatra because the situation may not be safe.

These warnings don't take much hold here in Thailand, or in Sri Lanka, where strict Muslims make up only small portions of the population. But in Aceh (search) province and other parts of Sumatra, that falsehood is being reported in newspapers and on radio and television.
Ken the above came from FOXNEWS.COM. It's not a question to me of what country is "friendly" or not... it's the fact that Islam is not friendly to anyone who believes anything else... specifically Christians and Jews. Our aid is not going to change that one bit.

If a dog bites people more than once who do we put down, the dog or the person bitten? Making nice to the dog won't prevent it from biting again.

I know there a those who want to believe that if we only make nice, that these people will see us in the right light. These stories are only the beginning. It's going to get worse. There is no making up to those who are endoctronated in the Muslim faith. Give them all the aid and money you want. They will accept it and then shoot you in the back as you walk away.

not muslims, muslim "extremists"

but indonesian gov't is not extreme in the least.
they get 99% of their money from western tourists.

the gov't is just playing it safe IMO, not just
for us, but mostly for themselves. they live with
this radical problem every day and these nuts want
nothing more than to revolt and install their own
form of control over the people. they would just
love for the US or current gov't to "martyr" a few
freedom fighters so they could further their cause.

Kagee I go back and forth on the the issue. It is very tough.

I think in the end I will take this attitude.

We have a chance here to make a few friends, or make more enemies. We should try to make a few friends.

Ken

"We have a chance here to make a few friends, or make more enemies. We should try to make a few friends."

Ken...

Yes we should approach it with that attitude. I however, am not convinced we can win enough friends to make a difference in the overall picture.

Re: Indonesia wants us out.

I'm not sure what to think about this. On one hand I think they have every right to reinforce their soverignity (sp?). I don't hink we would let any country into ours unconditionally in the event of a tragedy like this.

One a second hand, I think it was Indonesia that refused the aid of Isreal. I think that says a lot.

Third, I have heard that they are refusing or controlling access to certain sites where they may be involved in their own human rights abuses.

On the issue of the Carrier moving to international waters, Indonesia did not want pilots doing training missions in their waters. To me that seemed reasonable.

I don't think the correct response is to say screw you because it isn't always my way or the highway. We have to keep the bigger picture in mind.

If they take our aid and crap on us afterward, that will be apparent in the international community and will reflect poorly on them.

Honestly, I'm not even sure if that is the case! We are always taken for granted. You guys remember the countless posts on the thread where the UN Called us too "stingy." I don't understand, we give and give and give, yet we still are called the "bad guy" in the world.

It's quite confusing. Imagine being an alien looking down at the world. They see a country which had been fortunate in that they had prospered. They provide aid to much of the world. Yet they are hit with a constant barrage of hate.

Who knows!?

Sean

Re: Indonesia wants us out.

There will always be critics but I would rather be in the position of giving unconditional aid and being rebuked than to be giving conditional aid.

There is a sizable population out there who thinks our aid to these countries actually keep them in poverty.

Whatever we do we will be criticized. I also think Indonesia has to save face in front of its muslim brethren. They need to not look like the western devil is saving them.

"There is a sizable population out there who thinks our aid to these countries actually keep them in poverty. "

Isn't foreign aid just another form of WELFARE? (set aside the disaster relief)

Look at all the countries we give WELF... I mean Foreign Aid to... Are they any better off today than 20 years ago? Haiti comes to mind.

It's proven... you want to really help someone improve their plight, get them off of welfare and taking care of themselves.
