info needed on johnson 7.5 LS

Hello all!. I am requesting any info one might have on a johnson 7.5 model # J8SRLCTA. Basically I need the year and where to get a shop manual. Also need to know any glitches that this motor may have. I am buying a sailboat with this motor attached and have not heard it run. Gas is bad in the tank and I don't want to try and start it.<br /><br />Many thanks for your help<br /><br />Jim

If the gas in the can is bad, probably the gas in the carb is also bad and you'll be looking at a carb rebuild. Replace the waterpump impeller if it hasn't been done in a couple seasons.<br /><br />With older outboards, it's all about what kind of care it's had and what condition it's in now, not what kind of reputation it had 20 years ago.

thank you for your answers to my questions and I have two more.<br />How hard is the carb rebuild and is it very involved?<br /><br />Same question on the water impeller. I can't imagine that this motor has been used that much because it is on a sailboat.<br /><br />Thank you<br />Jim

Rebuilding the carburetor and replacing the impeller are pretty simple tasks and only require basic tools and a service manual. You could easily do both in an evening. If the waterpump hasn't been done in a long while, you may run into corrosion problems. But we're here for you if you run into that. (Hint - don't force stuck bolts and screws!)<br /><br />As you probably know, the problem with engines that have been used on sailboats is not the use, but the non-use (neglect and rust) and the positive abuse they receive from their owners, who treat with distain anything that consumes gasoline, smokes and makes noise on the water.
