I have a cracked mercruiser 3.0l block, its cracked in the area where the lifters are on the side, Ive read you cant repair a crack that is not to the outside, why is that? I believe i could have it welded.

It is damn near impossible to weld cast on the outside the inside is oil soaked, due to the different rates of expansion with cast iron, and the high nickel filler rod.
You can't hitch a ride home on water.

the crack i thought was in the area behind the push rods, there is an inspection plate on the side that unbolts, the plate had rust on the inside down at the bottom and i was told it was a hairline crack there in the block. Where would a 3.0l normally crack if it did.

On the Otherside of the block,...... Where the Water Jacket is.......

Rust where you're seeing it, is probably caused by water coming from Somewhere Else.......

Aha, I don't know a 3.0; so maybe a bad gasket on the cover? What does the gasket look like? Bondo strikes again?

Bondo are you saying that the 3.0l water jackets are only on the side of the block where the freeze plugs are, what do the cylinders get cooled by on the side where the lifters are? I really am confused now.

3.0l possibly cracked

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bondo are you telling me that there is a water jacket down only one side of a 3.0l mercruiser block. I thought it may be cracked on the side where the lifters are but your saying the side with the freeze plugs is the only side water flows on.

The Water Jacket is Up High on the block on that side,........
There's the Cam,+ Lifters,+ Pushrods,+ the Dist.,+ Lots of Oil splashing around on the starboardside down lower.................

The "Soft Spot" on those In-line motors is along the Coreplugs on the Portside.........
Usually just above them.........
