Inline 6 dies above 2000 rpm

I posted this on "Scream and Fly" but knowing there are some "Inline" people here thought I would try here too.

Well I got my boat back Friday after they replaced a bad exhaust cover gasket that was spraying water onto #6 (Earlier post I relayed that they thought it was the covers). They also replaced the lower switch box, said it was intermittent. Took it out the next day (today) and it wasn't right from the start but got worse as time went on. What I noticed was that my voltmeter read 2 volts lower than before (was at 15.5 now at 13.5). With a hole shot it won't go above 2000 rpm without dieing. But if I run at 2000 or a little lower rpm the voltmeter heads up toward 15.5. When I get to 15.5 volts it will take off just fine. If I go to idle the voltmeter slowly heads back down to 13.5. If I take off before it gets down past 15.0 it goes ok but if it gets below that it falls on its face and will stall if i don't back off. Any clue? I guess it will go back in Monday but thought I would see what you guys thought.

Your problem sounds a little like the one I had. First I have an 84 2 stroke outboard 90hp inline 6. Dont worry about the voltmeter cause its gonna fluctuate. After 2 switchboxes, 1 coil, 6 spark plugs, fuel pump kit and and 3 carb kits and 1100$ it ended up being the stator! So, if I hope that helps you out and you dont have to spend 1100$ to get your boar running.

It could very well be the stator but first remove the 2 yellow wires at the rectifier, tape the ends so the don't short out and test run the engine, if it runs up to speed replace the rectifier then go directly to shop that did the poor work and get your switch box or money back.

I have the old switchbox, anyone know how to bench test it?

Switch boxes can not be bench tested

I had that problem with my 1984 mercury 90 it was the stator. I had to buy a $90 flywheel puller to get to it. but while I was there I replaced every thing but the boxes. coils etc

I checked the stator with an ohm meter and it checks out ok acording to the manual. I realize that may not always mean it's good but I hate to put out over $150 unless I see a failure.

Believe it or not it turned out to be the carbs. Got it back today and took it down to the river. it ran like a champ. He said he had it too lean and the #3 carb linkage had to be adjusted because it lagged the other 2.
