Inline 6 reverse doesn't work

Last year, before I turned my boat into a drift boat, I was having some problems with reverse. ('74 inline 6) When I bought it last year, it had no reverse. The previous owner gave me a reciept for ~$900 worth of work on a "reverse problem". I adjusted the shift cables, and it worked great for a short time. Then, it would reverse fine for a few seconds, and then kind of jump out of gear for a second, and go back to working fine again. By the end of the year, it would make a horrible grinding noise the whole time you were in reverse, although it still went in reverse.<br /><br />Any ideas what's wrong? Right now the lower unit is detached, I'd like to get this problem fixed before my new powerhead gets herre if I can.

Has it had water in the lube and froze? This will push the bearing carrier back and not allow reverse to engage. Shift cam could be worn--not allowing the clutch to fully engage reverse. Clutch could be worn to the point where the dogs do not get a good grip. Only way to tell is tto pull the carrier and have a look......

Hi, it sounds like the clutch dog is stripped out in the lower unit. If the cables are not adjusted right, the clutch dog does not engage all the way into gear. If you try to shift into forward or reverse too slow and can hear or feel the gears grinding, then you need to shift a little faster into gear. this wears the clutch dog out quicker when it is shifted too slow.

how hard of a fix is it to replace or repair the clutch dogs, I have the same problem, the guy I bought the boat from this summer said he replaced cables last summer, and ever since I have got it, it makes that grinding noise in reverse, and doesn't reverse very well at all.
