inline carb question

hello. 1976 merc 1150. <br />i get terrible gas milage. i only get about 2.25 at best, and 1.5 mpg at WOT, which is terrible.<br /><br />if i replace the carbs with those from say a 85 or 90hp inline, would they have smaller jets, thus providing a smidgeon better milage?<br /><br />i know 2 stroke outboards are bad with milage as i have 9 others, but this is terrible. all other inline owners ive spoken to get about the same, some even worse. i had a suzuki 55 that got almost 6 mpg on this same boat. <br /><br />ive been trying to sell the beast on ebay but unfortunately , im still the owner of the ol' girl. i was really hoping to get something a bit smaller.<br /><br />currently looking at a 70hp tripple cylinder. we'll see<br /><br />thanks to any and all replies

Go to smaller jets - It'll run lean - and burn pistons.<br /><br />-W

why doesnt it burn the pistons on the 90hp, if they use the same block and internals????

Not really the same internals as the porting is more restricted on the 90. It doesn't just suck less fuel, it sucks less air too.<br /><br />-W

Hey Phatman, I just recently did an economy check on my Merc 1250. I averaged around 4-5 mpg if I stayed at my optimum cruise of 3800-4000rpm @ 27ish mph. I ran my figures off of mileage recorded on my GPS over a 35 mile route. I burned about 7 gallons of fuel. Too bad you are so far away, I'd want it for the power tilt/trim, or to simply use. Hate to see a good merc go to waste...
