I posted on here a while ago about the removal of the drive and found it was quite simple. I have repaired the motor and I'm ready to install both the motor and drive. Here's the question.

I have no speedo cable or anything like that. Finding the forward postition on the drive it's self is a piece of cake. The manual does not show a clear image for the shift shaft or shift mechanism postition on the bell housing. Any help on positioning before I slide the dirve on would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

Put the helm in fwd....
Turn the prop ccw & the shift shaft cw to put in fwd....
Hold it in place to insure it stays in gear....
The shift shaft will face directly fwd if you have it right...JK

It is important that the prop is in forward gear as well as the shift shaft facing forward as jk says - the rest should be straight forward.

I left one part out. How about the Shift slide assembly. I see it slides back and forth. The drive part I got and the shift mech. pivots to the slide assembly. So that should be rotated center away from the slide assembly?

on my pre alpha drive, there is an o-ring around the water inlet hole on the left side. sometimes the o-ring will fall off. if you have this too, keep an eye on the ring.

The fork should fit on the wheel....
You need to make sure that doesn't slip while putting the drive on, too....
Hope that makes sense.....JK

Actually not at all :) I think I'm over anyilizing this all. I have three componates. The drive I have figured out. it's in the forward position. The two in question are the bell housing componates. The slide assembly has a l shape at the end. It can either face straight up or in toward the center. In the center of the bell houseing is a componate that pivots on a rod that goes down thru the bell housing. (wheel maybe) I believe it needs to extend straigh out and not turned in toward the shif assembly.

The fork on the cable end (shift slide) needs to fit on the wheel assy so that the bottom will fit into theshift shaft on the drive.......
I can't write it any better than that....
You need a picture link to Merc. manual #6....
If you can't get it from my directions, you need a pic.....JK

Ayuh,......

At the Bottom of the transom assembley,...... There's a Channel in the bottom end of the Shift Shaft,.....
It accepts the Top end of the Shaft coming out of the Outdrive..........

Both of these Have to be In Line with the Keel Line,... Fore,+ Aft,... Straight Ahead,...
The Outdrive part, Slides Into the Transom Assembley part,.... It has to be Straight,.. In Line with everything or it Won't Slide On.............

Up Higher in the bellhousing is the End of the Cable,.. Where the Cable Slide,.. Which has a small Fork shape, or Slot on the Side of the End,...
The Little Wheel, or Bearing that's attached to the bellhousing's Shift Shaft, needs to fit Into the Fork, or Slot,....
The Cable Slide will only fit Into the
Grand Scheme of things, 1 Way........

Good Luck........

Thanks for all the help. I was just looking at it wrong. All makes sense now. Sometimes you just have to step back and realize it's not a problem but a feature :)
