The power tilt and trim on my 85 hp Evinruide motor needs to be replaced. I am looking at using a CMT PT130. How difficult is the installation?

Can I remove the motor with a floor jack? If so how do I do that? How much does the motor weigh?

The shop wants over $1000 to install.

Re: Installation of CMC power tilt and trim

I used a heavy winch strap to pull my 80hp Mercury off the transom, using a ladder as a gantry of sorts.

Anything that will give you a mechanical advantage will make this easier and more safe, but I'm not sure how a floor jack would help.

That motor probably weighs around 250-300lbs. You can check the NADA website for a more accurate number.

Making sure the bracket is installed correctly is important, but not to the point where I'd spend 1k for a shop to do it. Get a manual from cookmfg.com and follow the factory instructions.

Here's a link to their manuals in PDF. http://cook-mfg.net/downloads.html

I have a PT-130 and it's a great item to have for older outboards lacking TnT.

did you get the unit for free????

why dont you pursure the path of rebuilding, replacing the Factory TNT unit????

you shouldnt have to remove the motor from the boat for that..

then even if you do mount on the CMC unit...you will have to keep the motor LOCKED somehow.....

cant you find a working TNT unit for less than $300 someplace??

Bob, that's why I asked him what year it was. I was leading up to your questions. If it's a pre-'78 motor though, I can understand why he might not be able to find another unit. However, I'd still agree that getting his rebuilt is probably the best bet. There are places that even specialize in that.

Don't chuck your unit. Someone will buy it from you on ebay for a nice tidy sum of money.

Re: Installation of CMC power tilt and trim

I ordered a CMC PT 130 and now taking off the old trim. There are two cylinders which are not part of the power trim system . Should they be removed or does it make any difference? (see picture). I removed the pin when I removed the others.

I had asked about how to remove the motor and a gentleman suggested using a ladder.
I took his advice and it worked great with a come-a-long (see attached)

Glad that the ladder idea worked for ya!

On my 80hp Merc the "tilt-assist" cyclinders remain on the motor. I'm not 100% sure but I think you will be able to do the same.

How about some photos of the boat? :)

I am pretty sure those two cylinders in the picture are the bulk of the TNT system!!! one of for TRIM and one is for TILT...

I am kinda at a loss to figure how your motor stays locked when in reverse???? with this new CMC TNT unit...which just mounts on the boat and then the motor mounts on the unit...

what locks the motor and the bracket together??????? seems it would just pull itself up when in reverse!!

is there a lock??? for a motor even though it comes with POWER TNT??

hope you got it figured out.... i am scratching my head...

but good luck
