Carb kits are in. Got motor running and idling perfect. Sounds really good and smooth at idle.

Took it out on the bay....started great, idled out of the channel perfectly. Started to apply some throttle. Got to 23 MPH and running great, gave her some more throttle...sputter!!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!! Pull back on the throttle and it ran fine again.

I can get up to about 1/4 throttle...more than that and it sputters.

i had a friend in the boat with me....when it started to sputter i got him to pump the heck out of the primer bulb. No affect at all.

Options? Thoughts?

I'm quite discouraged right now.

Check your link & Sync, check to make sure the timer base is advancing smoothly with the throttle.

Re: installed carb kits, still sputtering.....

I don't really follow.

When I reinstalled, I had to adjust the link on my top carb becasue the throttle plate was open a little tiny bit. I adjusted it so that both carbs throttle plates are perfectly closed, and the linkage operates smoothly and both plates open the same way at the same time.

What does "check to make sure the timer base is advancing smoothly with the throttle" mean? I have the Seloc manual for my engine but didn't see anything like this in it.

BTW, i have a ton of pictures of my carb rebuild on my photobucket page. I'm going to put together a little tutorial full of pictures for newbs like me....once I get it running right. of course.

What is this thing?

It seems to operate just fine so I've ignored it. It's part of the throttle linage, but it seems to push and pull just fine. If you push on it with your finger you can make it bend though.

:(You might want to redo the clamps on all of your fuel lines with the correct parts. The originals are special ties with curved faces that fit the contour of the hoses. To get them tight enough you need a tool.

Tie strap is part # 0320107; they can be purchased from your dealer in packs of 100.

The broken part next to your thumb in your picture is called a Shell - part # 334153. The rod to which the shell is attached is called the Throttle Cam Link.

I don't want to lose track of this......

did you blow out the pickup tubes when you did the carbs, did you remove the jets and clean them. replace the broken linkage, before it leaves you, with a paddle.

Yes, I blew out all the pickup tubes. Pulled out all the jets except the ones in the bowls. I couldn't get them out due to lack of the special tool, but they were pretty clean. I sprayed them all out with the carb cleaner and then blew them out with a can of compressed air.

I'll buy a new linkage.

Other than the carbs, what else might cause my issues? If I need to pull the carbs back out to double check them I will, but I want to avoid that. They really weren't too dirty and I think I cleaned them out pretty good.

Check you?re Seloc manual for the link and sync, the part in the bowl that you refer to is the high-speed orifice. The high-speed orifice controls the fuel at high speed, I would try the link and sync. Are you absolutely certain the high speed jets are clean?

The link and sync, synchronizes the timing advance with the throttle advance so they both work in harmony.

OK, I'll look up the link and sync.

I really want to believe that I've cleaned the carbs out well enough, so I hope this is it.

Well, that's it for now until the weekend I think.

Thanks.

After you do the link and sync report back, if that doesn?t fix it there are some good folks here that will help you. Just remember that there are steps to follow in ruling out things to get to the problem, the link and sync just being one of them.

BTW I like you?re boat, and I pass by you?re way on our way to Lake Nippissing for some beautiful scenery and good fishing.

Thanks, Jeff.

I'll like my boat too when I manage to get it running right. ;)

Re: installed carb kits, still sputtering.....

I've update my photobucket album of carb rebuild pictures. Still working on tagging and ordering them, but there are a lot of good resource pics there.

The album is located here:

Also, here is a picture of the the fuse and line that kept blowing:

I think it was blowing because I didn't turn the primer valve to free flow before the lines and carb bowls were filled....meaning that the primer was sucking air and burning out. That's my theory anyway.....

I'll post again when I try the link and sync procedure.

Re: installed carb kits, still sputtering.....

OK, I understand what Link and Sync is now.

The link part I got.....but I couldn't find anything about "sync" in the fuel section of my manual. I didn't think that it actually had to do with timing.

So the sync is supposed to be done with a timing light, tachometer, and test tank so you can set it at idle and under load.

I have none of those things, so I think I'm going to take it to the shop. This job seems a bit beyond me......

Labour rates at my local shop are $89 / hour, and they said that if all it needs is the link and sync it shouldn't take any longer than one hour.
