Installing a Long Shaft on a SIB

Hi, today i went out for the first day on my new inflatable, its a 14'' Saturn and it has a 40 HP 2 stroke Motor LongShaft. Everything was ok but i feel i cannot take it max throttle, the long shaft causes too much drag and the transom moves a lot.

I was wondering how can i raise the motor a couple of inches higher, I live in Baja Mexico and i cannot buy one of those jack plates or mini jackers but i was wondering if there is something i can make myself to raise the motor.

Thanks~!

I'm afraid you'll need to raise it more than a couple of inches. The transom on the Saturn is a funky shape, but you could try building it up and then bolt the motor to the transom. Don't use just the hand screws. All of Saturn's boats use short shaft motors.

I bet that things screams with the 40hp on there. I have the same boat with an 18hp and it's a little scary at full throttle.

Good luck.

I can't answer your question, bit I am interested in your boat. What do you do for seats in that boat?

Could I Bolt another thick board in front of the transom but a few inches higher and and then put the motor in there?
40 HP is scary i haven't tried full throttle yet, i am afraid the boat is going to break!

You know, I wouldn't do that with a 40hp motor. I'm thinking that's going to be too much torque.

you must remeber that the pontoons hold the transom at a spesific angle, if you don't inflate it properly you can tear out the whole transom and lose your motor in the process ..... here is a transom extension that I built for one of my inflatables ....... ps. never put a 120hp on a 14ft inflatable ...

It worked well for me, there is a big advantage to the one I have to the one you have in the link ...... you see the one you showed in the link will cause extra stress on the transom and the pontoons because it is not directly above the transom, it will cause the tubes to stretch, even break .... google "transom elevator", they are cheap ..... or wait, here is a link http://www.marineengine.com/products/accessory.php?in=3430218

deejaycee?
how much did it cost you to make the elevator? i really dont want to spend over $100 on one of those but if i have no choice i might end up doing the mod that thasasdaddy did.
gmata007?
if you can build one like the one deejaycee made i would be interested on getting one from you. where in baja are you? i'm in tijuana
BTW i have a 12.5 Saturn but it has the JPmotorsports branding with a merc 25hp EFI long shaf

Watch out with constant full throttle operation to plane fast, that sib has light alum floors, if too much torque is used with under inflated tubes will end breaking transom floorboard lateral rails in short time. A 14" performs well with a 30 HP, 40 is too heavy for that size boat. It's not clear if it's a sib or rib, if rib ok, no alum floorboards.

Happy Boating
