I have a weekend filled with work.
I am going to install my wood stove I just got.
A great deal too! Only $125 for it...and its in perfect shape.
So here's the deal.....I have a tree right outside....about 15 feet away from where the wood stove vent is going to go. The tree is about 80ft high, and overhangs over my trailer.
I've already trimmed the branches, but I am concerned about how far a tree should be away from my vent.
Any ideas for me?
Have any of you installed a wood stove....I sure could use some advice from someone who has already installed one.
Maybe I should cut the thing down and burn it. :D

Thanks for any tips...much appreciated.
Brother Chris.

If it's 80 ft tall chances are there are no small branches and leaves to catch fire. If it's a hardwood tree it will make great firewood... if it is softwood/conifer it is a fire hazard anyway!

Re: Installing a wood stove

At my house I have a big blue spruce that is about 15 to 20 feet away from my chimney. The insurance agent inspected everything this past fall and said everything was fine.

One thought that could be a concern is if the prevailing wind is blowing from the chimney in the direction of the tree.

It's a cherry tree, so there are some small branches.
How about I take a picture tomorrow(during thre daylight) and post it...so we can make a judgement call then.

Cherry burns nice in a stove. Your choice... but if it is that big I would keep it in place.

Woodstoves and trees can be just fine, you can make a spark arrester for the chimney. Being in B.C., bc, it's not dry enough to be much of a hazard. When we see the picture we'll know better. No worries. ;)

Rule of thumb is 10 feet, sounds like you're fine. Be more concerned about proximity to your roof, that's what the 10 foot rule was designed for.

An 80' cherry tree, wow!

Are you routing the chimney thru the roof or the side wall?

Be sure to do this by the book.
We don't want you to be homeless, or dead.

I would check with your insurance company and local code people. I personally would not install a wood stove in a trailer.

Burn the cherry tree!!!

Dad had a 40foot cherry tree 20 years ago he sold for 600$ - long straight cherry wood is almost like living gold.

Not to mention the barbecue joints that would pay for the scrap pieces

As for the wood stove - clearance!! in the stove to the wall, stove pipe and chimney to peak of roof - those are all critical numbers to make sure you get them right.

As far as the tree is concerned you wont burn it down your chimney should not be putting out that type of heat from the top

tomatolord

The wood stove it not going inside the trailer.
I have built a very large enclosed patio...that is where the wood stove is going.
I plan on routing the pipe out the side of the wall.
But looks like this project is on hold until next weekend.
My friend just invited me to the CFL, Grey Cup today.
He won tickets on the radio. The seats are right in the middle and 2 rows up from the front. It is going to be awesome.

10 feet has always been the standard.

Be sure to check your insurance first. Mine will drop me if I use a wood stove unless it is professionally installed with proof from the contractor.

That cherry tree could be worth some $$$ if it has any size to it and is in good health. If it is good enough for veneer we could be talking $1000-$2500.

Re: Installing a wood stove

My friend who lives on the same property is a manager at a Veneer plant.
He said it was not worth their time, but thanks for the thought.
I still never got the wood stove installed yet.
But a friend of mine is giving me 2 sections of pipe for free. I need 3 more sections in order to install it. Those pipes are NOT cheap!!!
I was quite suprised at how much they are.
And after looking at the tree, I think I will have to cut it down, not trim it.
I was going to take a pic, but cannot find the cord to connect the camera to the puter. I'll keep looking for it....it can't be far.
B.C.

Re: Installing a wood stove

brother chris, cherry burns nice but does not create many coals so is better for daytime use when someone is there to feed the stove. Make sure you season (age) the wood for at least 6 months before burning.
