Thanks in advance for being patient to this current Clymer manual owner. I need to ask a question not covered there before my Seloc manual arrives. I have 85 -85 hp Force And need to know if the Motor and existing bracket have to come off to install Tilt/Trim Unit I saw a post from 2/2002 which was never answered. Same question. Does the Bracket on Tilt/;Trim Unit (replace) the Force Motor bracket or slip and bolt underneath and in between the existing brackets?

Thanks

Doug

Re: Installing Force Tilt/Trim

IF you have clymer #isbn 0-89287-732-4 look at page 547 fig 29. The shock, tilt cylinder, and trim cylinder fit between tne transom mounting brackets. The hyd pump and electric motor mounts to the starboard transom bracket. I think you will have to remove the linkage that locks the motor when in reverse if it has a reverse lock. The only way you will know if you can use your transom brackets is look for t/t mounting holes.

Re: Installing Force Tilt/Trim

no ihave a different ver. book. Helpful for troubleshooting and maintenance. nothing on installation and removal. Big relief that I may not have to remove motor. As far as I have scanned with eyeballs, yes there are mounting holes for it on existing motor bracket. I am going to mount t/t on vertical plywood support nad bolt down, wire and test it out first. Then use plywood as template for drilling holes. Sucker is heavy and a lopsided drill out will not make my day. This will all be done after holidays. Wife says so. T/T in the box until then. It supposedly came off a force 90 or 120 and is "suppose" to also work on mine. I am reading posts like a madman to learn fast. Thanks for reply. I do have a bracket on the T/T that laps over transom and bolts upper and lower. Just couldn't judge width to tell if it fit snug inbetween the mount bracket. The T/T has a huge center cylinder with a shaft that slides up and down that doesn't match the clymer manual illustrations or any merc/force parts diagrams I've seen.
Sorry to be longwinded but your the first words of knowledge I have heard to date and I am thirsty.

Thanks again. Any help is blessing in your pocket from me.

Doug

Re: Installing Force Tilt/Trim

My Clymer shows 2 completely different units for the '85 85hp, and the 90 / 120 hp motors.
The 85 uses a "Force type", which has the motor and pump to the starboard of transom bracket. While the 90 / 120 uses a Mercury style 1 peice integral system, all of which mounts between the brackets. (pages 522, 523, 525, 536, 537)

Cross your fingers.

Re: Installing Force Tilt/Trim

that's one thing resolved. I was having difficulty matching my unit to the correct force model it came off of. The ebay was very nice but doesn't communicate well. The 90-91 Trim model diagram is it. It has the huge heavy housing with the rod in the middle and everything is attached to it's own bracket that laps over the transom and bolts on. Best that I can see, if it fits up and under existing motor bracket, I shoild be ok. I think the tilt rods will match mounting holes on motor bracket. I just couldn't tell from looking at a glance if the trim unit bracket replace the motor bracket. Now that I know it's the 91 90hp trim model with it's own bracket-

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/images/FORCE/FOB4696/33.png

It's a beast to lift and flip around so I have been careful so far. Wife won't let me know touch the boat until after the holidays (christmas) so I am drooling. If I can unbolt tilt locks on the motor, suspend leg from tree to keep it out of the way, I may be able to hang the unit over the transom and lign it up inch by inch.

My clymer has exactly 5 paragraphs and that's only on pump and motor theory/ mantenance. No pictures AARGH. I will keep posting.

Bear if you have a scanner or copy of these pages, i'll pay for 'em. I have a seloc bid on ebay and may even go and get a newer manual at a force /merc place in Tampa if they have one. Don't care. Just want to make sure this fits and is compatible before drilling.

email is ddewell1@tampabay.rr.com

Thanks to all.

Doug

Re: Installing Force Tilt/Trim

I can definately tell now that this unit is complete with swivel bracket. It's width of 10 inches matches exactly the same 10 inches of my "non'trim" bracket currently on the boat. Next step will be to put these side by side and match the holes to see if the trim unit will disassemble from it's existing bracket and then re-assemble to my current bracket so I don't have to lift engine. Then I may be looking for a lift ring to get the motor off. I wonder if a repair place will rent me one. The I can use a heavy oak tree limb and a hoist to lift the motor and toss the old bracket, replaceing it with the one which already has a snug unit bolted to it. Sounds easier to do this except for the lift part. I can then shore up the old holes, inspect transom core and re-seal transom caps. ohhh what a project. I'll keep you posted. I can't see how these same width brackets can co-exist on the transom. It looks like the bracket without the unit or the bracket with unit. Not both.

Thanks

Doug

Re: Installing Force Tilt/Trim

ok.. anyway. I won the seloc manual so i'll have two books. it appears I bought both tilt/trim assembly and the swivel yoke for the engine with the ram.

I can either disaasemble the trim unit from all this if I have matching holes or lift the engine and replace the bracket, yoke and trim in 1 assembly.

I'm going to check for all the matching holes next, since lifting the engine is not on the remaining project restoration list I have. I'll post a follow-up in January as to how I made out. Until then Season's Greeting in Sweden.
and thanks...

Doug
