This thing has slid on right up to about an 1/8 inch from the bell housing. The splines are engaged and the shift linkage looks right.

Can I put the nuts on or do I need to take things apart again? I did that once but everything looked good.

Thanks

if you are sure the shift linkage is right use some care and it should not hurt

It's probably being held up a little bit by the rubber seals for the water pickup tube. When you start tightening it down, make sure you can keep turning the input shaft and the propshaft turns without binding.
PS: You did replace that quad ring for the oil passage hole didn't you?

Without it, you can't keep oil in the drive.

Re: installing gen II lower unit

DonS,
Thanks for the visual aid. I mispoke.
I'm installing what the manual calls the "sterndrive unit". I had a Merc Tech replace the upper and lower seals. Hopefully he replaced the quad seal.
I'm using the "number 6" manual. This boat is new to me and I haven't gotten the correct manual yet. I was hoping that the difference between drives was minor enough that I wouldn't have to get the Gen II manual.
The flange on the drive shaft housing is about 1/8 from the surface of the bell housing.

Thanks for your help

The drive is up agains gasket (a) in the drawing below. That's what seals the water out of the bellows. It will hold the drive out about an 1/8".
