Installing Lower Unit Exhaust Tube

My rebuilder left out the lower unit exhaust tube on my '98 Johnson 90HP motor.
I have the tube and Seloc book, but need some help on the procedure.
1. Do I need to drain the gear lube or is that contained is a housing that won't be distrubed when I separate the lower unit?
2. Do any of the shift rods or the water tube run thru this exhaust tube or can I just disconnect the rods up top, drop the unit down far enough to gain clearance, insert the exhaust tube, and close it back up?
3. Are there any "tricky" parts to this install that I need to be aware of... like shift lever orientation or indexing of parts? Does the water tube re-seat itself?
4. Should I use a lube or coating on the exhaust tube seals before installing to help it seat correctly?
Any other suggestions or gotcha's would be greatly appreciated.

No need to drain anything. Just disconnect the shift as if you were going to drop the unit to change the pump.

I usually put some Adhesive M on the top and bottom seal to help them slide into place.

You will need to make sure the water tube goes in the pump housing.

Truthfully, if they left it out I'd let them repalce it.

Thanks for the help.
Will the water tube stay in place (connected) at the top or where is it most likely to separate?
Is "adhesive M" an off-the-shelf product? Just not familiar with it...
I'd let the the rebuilder replace it too, but they are an 800 mile round-trip away from the motor's current location and this seems like a fairly straight forward job.
Thanks, again

The water tube will (should) stay in the mid section. Just be sure it gets back in the water pump housing.

Adhesive M (Evin / John brand) is a non-hardening gasket sealing compound. Any brand will do.

now its 3m super weather strip adhesive. follow the procedure for water pump replacement and dont use the parts you dont heed. read and understand what the procedure is before twisting wrenches and its easy.
good luck and keep posting
