i have an old '67 or '68 merc 95 HP outboard. i am attempting to swap out my throttle controller, but use the existing shift cables and power cables since they are in better shape. my question is: if i do not adjust anything at the motor end and simply change cables on the controller side, will everything be ok?

at the motor end, we had everything adjusted (idle, shifting positions) and I dont want to mess that up. i also dont want to damage the gears if the new controller doesnt shift right. my guess is that all of the fine tuning is done with the ends that connect to the motor. if i dont adjust these, will the new controller act the same as the old? the controllers look exactly the same, the old is white, the new is black. i have been told that all of them function the same. how can i tell if it is shifting correctly before starting it up? is there an easy way to gauge if the shift cables are pushing and pulling the correct amount?

Re: installing new throttle controller

install..check your throttle at the engine for movement to both the idle stop and the the full throttle stop. adjust cable at the engine for a slight drag at the idle stop ..I use a piece of paper..you wont change any engine adjustments
idle , and wide open( timing /carbs ) are as before

place shifter in forward ..then bring back to neutral..then check prop for free neutral..N0 clicks..then put in reverse then back to neutral ..
now check prop for free neutral..
you should be good to go..
if neutral is not free ...sorry you have to adjust cable at the engine to make it free from both rev and forward ......you wont mess it up ..

hope this helps

well, i did mess it up! but the problem was actually in the position of the shift lever. where I though the neutral postion was, was actually engaging forward. this also resulted in no trottle when in reverse, but it would shift into reverse. luckily a friend spotted the problem and got everything set right. rather than replacing the entire shifter, i ended up just swaping the gear that was blown. this only took a few minutes to swap and reinstall.

that is why you need to put in gear ,and then bring lever back to free neutral ..spin prop to verify ..
glad you are up and running

Nice work heybaylor. I will need some help on my 700E or Mark 7A or whatever it is. Hope you wil be willing to comment as things progess. Still waiting for my manual to arrive before I get into anything heavy, but your experience with the direct reversing application would certainly be appreciated, if not remunerated.;-)

Re: installing new throttle controller

I am about to replace my old throttle controll and install a merc gen ii control. I know the cables need to be replaced at the same time. My question is, do I need to replace both shift/throttle cables going back to the motor.
The motor is a 1998 merc 115 hp 4 cyl two stroke.
