Is this OKay? Just till the nut gets tight and the lock tabs are in place? I don't see how I can get the prop to hold still to do a slow torque on it with my torque wrench unless I do it with the boat in gear and I'd rather not do that. Also what can happen if I go to far down and compress the lock ring a little bit. I ask because I just did this...

96' Maxum, 120 force/merc outboard.

I certainly would not do it. Are we talking a splined shaft here ??? that your prop is going on ?? Far too much chance of stripping or damaging threads in my humble opinion. If you have to use an impact to get it on then it sounds like thyere is trouble to begin with.
If you get away with it then good for you but I would not recommend that method.

In most cases you can block the prop with a short piece of 2X4 on outboards and IO's. 2X4 goes between anticav plate and prop blade. Too many things to go wrong with an impact wrench.

Wedge a 2x4 in between the prop and the motor. It will stop the prop from spinning so you can tighten with a regular torque wrench.

Excellent Idea. Thanks guys. I'll back it off and then re-do it.

Its 55ft-lbs correct?

Torque propeller nut until 55 lb-ft (75 N.m) is obtained and continue until 3 tabs on tab washer align with grooves on drive sleeve. This is from the service manual on Gen II Alpha1, your outboard should be similar. I just don't have access to an outboard manual.
