For rope start/tiller steered outboards the "Tiny Tach" is about the cheapest and easiest to install. It has an internal battery and the only wire to connect is one that wraps around a spark plug wire. Can be connected temporarily or permanently. They are little digital readout displays much like the hour meters you see on garden tractors these days. Just make sure you get one for a four stroke -- number of cylinders is a non-issue.
