Is it better to install the fitting thru the transom just below the water line or on the side of the hull? Also what should i use to seal the fitting 4200 or 5200? The fitting will be attached to a brass valve since i do 98% of my boating in freashwater

My recommendation is to do it right and install a bronze scoop intake on the bottom of the hull. Use 5200 fast cure as a sealant.

Valve wise stick to bronze no matter where you boat. They purposely miss match the threads on the thru hull (NPS) fitting so you have to use a valve appropriate for the application. Not to mention that galvanic corrosion isn't only confined to saltwater environments only. Anytime two dissimilar materials are in proximity to each other you have the potential for corrosion.

For safety reasons it should be a seacock but I?ve seen boats come from the builder with just bronze vales attached to the intake too.
