I'am somewhat mechanically inclined...somewhat, lol...and want to know how difficult it might be to install the tilt-trim package myself? My shoulders can't handle the lifting any longer and need to get this done. I have an older 80 horse merc. and a 15 ft. tri-hull. Any suggestions as to how difficult this might be? And perhaps a model that would be best for this motor. Tks. Daveywonder

What year ,SR#, and module is your motor? You have factory T/T and after market that you can use. Factory can be more work than after market and cost is somewhat same for both. You want new or used?

Re: installing tilt-trim?

I have an Evinrude 50hp that I added a CMC pt-130 aftermarket trim and tilt. The motor weight with my 50 was manageable with me and a buddy lifting just awkward but that 80 could be a little different. The CMC added 40lbs to the transom and set my motor back 4-6 inches not sure about factory weight or set back but u want to make sure and adjust ur trailer to accommodate these changes. Many people pull their own motors with just a strong overhead beam or a sturdy tree branch. You can pick up a chain hoist or something from the local Harbor freight for less that $50 which should make light work of that 80. If you plan on keepin the motor off while doing other work there is a good set of plans on Iboats here to make your own motor stand. Did it myself in less than an hour and was sturdy as all get out. Hope this info helped. If ya want take a look at my thread in my signature; the CMC installation starts on page 8; Also i started a thread for installation of a pt-130 but it didn't really take off... but have a look could help http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=491120

Thanks for your time you put into answering me! Really.... But this is certainly more work than I imagined, so the boat repair shop will do the work. Too run down to lift out a motor and the beers between time would triple this project. Tks. anyway...........Daveywonder

Re: installing tilt-trim?

Honestly that's how i felt when i undertook the challenge but the after market set up was pretty easy to install. I was going the professional install route but was talked into by fellow iboaters. It took me and a buddy no time... completed it in one day... just make sure ya do ur reading gather all ur materials and have a set game plan before u start the task. Tons of info here on iboats that's where i got mine from and a couple of tasty beverages just calms the nerves :D

Just expect to take a hit in the pocket book if ya go the repair shop way... Again I have never done anything like this before and it was far easier than expected. Good luck to ya and I'd be more than happy to answer any questions ya have to the best of my ability.

This is the kicker. How old is older?

I installed a PTT unit a couple summers ago on my 1971 Merc 800 (80HP). They are no longer available NEW for that vintage motor but are commonly found for sale on popular auction sites. The same type of PTT system (called TYPE 1) was used from the late 1960's thru to the mid 1980's. It consisted of the pump/reservoir mounted in the boat and two hydraulic rams mounted to the motor in-place of the factory shocks. Four hydraulic hoses connect the pump to the rams.

IF you have all the required hardware, installation takes a few hours and there is no need to remove the motor from the boat. The used systems run around $200.
