interchangability of outdrives

i have a 78 mercruiser pre alfa. can a alfa1 or alfaII etc be bolted right up or does the gimbal section have to be be changed? thanks ken

You have what is know as a "Mercruiser One drive" not an Alpha I, a One drive.
Some did have differnt length drive shafts(splined shaft on input shaft from engine), and you also need to find the proper gear ratio if you want things to work.

Ayuh,....

The GM, Inline motors use the Short input shaft....
