Anyone know of an alternative to the upholstered side panels?? I am trying to think of something else that I can use that is easier to maintain and easier to make myself... Dont want to give up on style though... I want it to look good and last...

How about mahogany or teak veneer on plywood and sealed with a clear resin. Interlux makes a coating for woodwork like that. If you prep plywood properly before upholstering it will last for longer than you'll probably have the boat..

So far I've been thinking of using 3/8" ply coated in various locations with white paint, carpet, and vinyl.

My original side boards were ply with foam padding and vinyl over them, about four large pieces per side overlapping each other with shelves and cup holders built in as well.

I'm thinking I want something simple and removeable, with as much storage as possible, so a plywood skin with some kind of visually acceptable covering, with a bit of padding under vinyl at the top is where I'm starting. I'll cut pockets for storage as I go, and attach other pieces at right angles to it forming pockets.

I might also get some of the premade pockets for things like fire extinguishers, etc.

That definately sounds cool!.. but also complicated:D

You just gonna wing it as you go, or do you have a drawing of some sort? I was thinking of using hydro turf... or something like it.

I am restoring my Gypsy '14 and was thinking about using live PVC or something. I was going to look at like PVC fence pannels or deck boards or something.

you gonna make pockets in the sides for storage?? if so how?
The dense deck boards are heavy and expensive:( I looked into them as a material for making the furniture frames out of...

I looked at the new fence pickets made of Trex. Lighter than the deck boards but still heavier than plywood.

Ok,

I would like to make side pockets, but need to do some more research into PVC products. The setup in the boat right now has a long wood laminated piece that runs all the way from the dash to the transom. I can easily replace that with a PVC product of some kind.

Would be so much better than wood.

I've drawn up a plan a couple times, and I have the original parts too... I think what I'll do is work incrementally, starting with the basic plywood shape and see where it goes from there.
