Ok if you followed the other thread I am changing out my Intermediate housing.

all's well until I go to bolt it together. I slide the two together and the input shaft still spins. so i Pull it apart and the input shafts are different splines AARRRGGHHH don't know why I didnt notice it before, I checked Everything else.

ANy way here is the problem. my old shaft has a ball bearing and a flat roller bearing. the one out of the replacement has a tapered bearing and a flat roller bearing.

Question is. A) how does the ball gear come off? press fit? I hope becuae the new one is in great shape while the old one is half gone.

B) if I pull that CLip off can I change the bearings over? will the ball bearing and flat bearing work on the other shaft? OR do I have to press the tapered bearing CUP out and use that in the "new housing" on the old SHaft?

Or did get the "Shaft"

Hope this makes sense. if not I'll take some pictures.

Thanks

The problem is - not everyone followed or read your other thread. So we have no idea what you are working on. ;)

Re: Intermediate housing INPUT SHAFT HELP!

ok here is where I am at, Look at the 2 pictures.

The one on the left is the NEW shaft
The one on the right is the old.

See the bearing difference. SO the new wont fit in the old housing.
at least it does not look like it. there is some kind of Sleeve in there. then the bearing race. it also look deeper than the new one.

Can I press that Race out of the NEW housing, and use the OLD bearing and shaft in it? or did they make different versions?

also I never got an answer. does the ball gear just press off the end?

the shafts also seem to be different diameters where the bearings ride.

Thanks

There is a plug in the center of the ball gear. Drive it out with a punch. Some shafts have a nut, some dont. then press the shaft out of the ball gear.

Thanks. That seams straight forward. now ifI can figure the bearing thing out.

Re: Intermediate housing INPUT SHAFT HELP!

it seems like you need the original shaft,so if you can get the races out of the original housing, you should be able to rebuild in the new housing.

I am hoping so, but they just don't seem to be the same. I don't see a way to get the Race out. usually you would have a step down so you can press the race out. but the hole get smaller behind the race. I do't see how to get to it to press it.

What the heck am I missing. it HAS to come out.

The hole gets smaller to keep the bearing race in place.

Try an industrial rent-all, ask for a slide hammer bearing puller. Here's what it looks like;

Place the jaws past the race, turn the collar to expand the fingers to hook behind the race, then slide the hammer forward. The impacts will remove the race.

That MIGHT work, there is only a TINY lip to get caught on, but as long as you can put some tension on it It might hold.

I just hope once I get it out it is the same as my original Intermediate housing.

I agree. to quote the seloc, use a slide hammer, and remove the inner bearing race and seal. also it's nice to know i'm not the only one with a stringer drive here.

The shafts and bearings are not interchangable.

I am going to have to agree with you. how do I know next time? from the outside the two intermediates looked exactly the same. that really stinks..

I'm learning a lot.. but about ready to throw it away LOL (not really) I wonder if a 454 and a jetdrive would fit. :D

Believe it or not I have a stringer factory service manual. Complete and in good shape for the age. If you want it PM me, i'll let it go relatively cheap.

Re: Intermediate housing INPUT SHAFT HELP!

PM sent..

SO i am pretty much down to trying another intermediate housing. anyone have an idea how I can make sure I am getting the right one? Like I said the one i bought looks exactly the same from the outside. its just the bearing issue. And the "hole" they go in. Without being able to see it or take a set of calipers to one to measure it is there a number or something I am looking for.

What I am saying if I find one on e-bay. how do I know I am not going to get skunked again? I guess I could measure the size where the splines are and count how many there are ans ask a potential seller to check that, but I would not trust e-bay sellers for their results.

Thanks for all the info you guys have been great help!

Oh I did not get totally skunked I did get a good upper and lower. so I am not 100% out on the deal.

anyone out the have an intermediate that might do me good?

Thanks

Re: Intermediate housing INPUT SHAFT HELP!

Well goodish news.

Yep, what I have is WRONGO... seems its from a 60's omc.
But I found a guy in Page AZ (about an hour 1/2 from me) that has a STOCKPILE. and he really seems to know his OMC.. we talked for about 30 mins, and he knew EXACTLY what I had, what was right what was wrong. and new what questions to ask right off the top of his head. including how many splines, legnth etc etc etc.. so I feel really comfortable with him.

He also said he would take what I have in trade towards whatI need. so WOO HOO. I'm outa little bit but at least I am goin in he right direction.

So this weekend I will pack everything in the truck take my checkbook and make a road trip. I should be GOLDEN!

Thanks everyone for the input you guys ROCK!
