Is it necessary to install the intermediate shift shaft in the Alpha series drives with the retaining split pin and washer? Once the drive is installed there really isn't any way for the shaft to fall out. The reason I ask is I'm wanting to swap the shafts between my SEI and MC1 drive and if the shaft can be removed without splitting the drive it would make life much easier.

I thought that's what the washer on top of the lower shift shaft seal did, and the split pin in the intermediate shaft was just to stop it falling out when the drive was taken off the boat?
