Intermittent Electrical Problem - starting motor

I have a 2003 Evinrude 115HP on my flats boat. I have an intermittent problem. Some times I can try to start the motor and it will not turn over. The battery is new, the trim and tilt works, my accessories work, the Evinrude multi-gauge works but when you turn the key all the way to the right to start it, it does not turn. It is like I have the motor in gear.

I can trim up the motor and down and then I may be able to get it to turn. Once it turns over, it starts immediately. It does not happen all the time but it does happen periodically. Any help would be apprieciated.

jiggle the shift lever in neutral, sounds like the neutral switch is sticking, in the controller.

Thanks for you assistance. I have tried moving the shift lever forward and reverse but the only thing that makes it work is tilting the motor up. This is crazy..

If you've got good battery power then it can be, from front to back, key switch, neutral switch, wiring from control to motor, solenoid. On a side, I've seen a lot of OMC motors that the starter system wire went bad. Orange/yellow wire to the solenoid

Possible broken wire in the harness where it flexes when trim occurs.

First make sure there's no corrosion on your battery terminals. why? cause electricity is funny like that...it won't let juice through to your starter motor until you've operated the tilt - wakes up the electrons or something. ;) Then make all the connections bright & tight - and by bright I mean so clean they shine - from the battery to the solenoid to the starter. If that don't help, then take the starter off & clean the points where the housing contacts the engine block.

Either that or else get out the continuity tester and start tracing the wiring fault charlie mentioned...........

good luck, and let us know what you find.
