Internet Connection Problems.....

Lately I have been having problems with my internet connection. I have ISDN service. I have talked to tech support from my ISP and they assure me that there has been no outages or problems with their servers that I am dialing into for the last week.

I have spoke with Sprint multiple times and the techs say that the switch is configured correctly. They have pulled and reinstalled my configuration a few times. ( I still have doubts about the switch working right, but they are no longer willing to research it)

Here is my problem: I configure the Cisco IDSN router using the Cisco supplied software. Everthing connects, both PC's connected to the router have internet connection. But anywhere from a few hours to a day later the connection no longer works, web pages time out.

I reconfigure, restart and everything is fine for a day or so, then it stops working again.

Sometimes one PC will have a connection, but the other does not.

I have run the network wizard to ensure that the PC's are set up right.

Sometimes I think that there could be an address issue, because rebooting the PC will cause it to not get a connection. I have checked windows and mcafee firewalls, removed all ISP blocks that were there, but it doesn't help. I have reduced the security level from "tight" to average. No change.

I worked on the PC's until midnight last night and gave up leaving the system with no internet.

I have bought a second Cisco ISND router and isntalled it with the same results. Both routers are brand new, not used.

What could be causing the problems connecting?

I have the same problem at my house with dsl, every day or so I have to reboot the router, and it works fine.

Same problem at work, but only about once a week.

If have no idea WHY it does it.. I just deal with it. My 3 brothers are my 3 neighbors, One has Cisco PIX, other two have Linksys wirless AP/Routers and they all run great all the time.

I'm thinking of switching routers and seeing if that helps any.

Do you use the voice lines, or just for data? I could probably get you a lucent isdn modem if you want to try it to see if you get the same results.

I have the same problem with Cable, but only on one of our four PCs. I am ready to throw that one out the window  It is the wife's, and she reminds me daily that mine always works fine. I hate this!!! I have considered calling the flippin' Geek Squad, but can't stand the thought of their stupid car parked outside my house. How embarrassing . . . Seems to blow out every night. Thought it was anti-spyware, but no.

Re: Internet Connection Problems.....

I have DSL, every Thursday, several times, it seems as though they (SBC) are sending out a command for the DSL modem to change IP's. Some times several times in just a few minutes, and only on Thursdays! Sure upsets my son when he is playing WOW  I think if you loose connection (physically) the IP's change, could be a bad connection, anywhere,,,, are you running DHCP or static IP's? Do you have to change the IP's config in the switch/router to gain conection back? Just me but I would turn off the microsuck winders far wall and use only third party stuff!

Noel,

Loses connection randomly throughout the day and night. No pattern that I can figure out. Funny thing is that the little wireless (mine is the only hard line others are wireless) icon still shows that it is connected and signal is "good" to "very good", but nobody is home. No surfing or email . . .

rwise,

My 12 year old is addicted to WOW too. We use it to motivate him i.e. homework first, then WOW. Has yours tried to get you to buy virtual money with real money? Holy carp that deal Ps me O . . .

Mark42, do you have an ISDN modem that is connected to your router? If so, skip the router and connect one PC to the ISDN modem and see if you still have the problem. If you still have the problem, then it is probably poor service. If the problem goes away, then it is the router.

CG

Re: Internet Connection Problems.....

SuperGlue, the Cisco 804 is a ISDN router. A combo ISDN Terminal Adapter (modem) and router (10 base t). I had it connected to a switch to get 100 throughput between PC's and let the Cisco act as a modem. Lately I have everything connected to the Cisco 804 to eliminate othe hardware being a problem.

rwise, it is set up to use DHCP with dynamic IP's. When I forgot to check the DHCP box, it didn't work at all.

Now get this, last night I left the system dead in the water. No connections anywhere. Today I come home from work, go right to the PC, turn one one and BINGO! it gets a connection. I run to the other pc and it too gets a connection. Everything has been working as it should tonight except the phone line service is not working on the ISDN line.

I didn't do anything and it works today. Go figure.

I also plan on canceling the phone service on the ISDN line because I just can't get it to work for long. I have been keeping the Cisco Monitor logs, about 5 pages of commands, status and lots of numbers. But now I can see what the difference is when things are working and when they aren't.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the system stays up for a while.

Cisco is office grade hardware. This stuff should be bullet proof. Linksys is owned by Cisco (last time I looked) and it too is supposed to be heavy duty. Most Linksys hardware comes with a 5 year warrenty. Keep your receipts!!!

Re: Internet Connection Problems.....

The Cisco stuff is alien to me so this may be of no help. I have linksys wireless 2.4 gig and had identical problems you are mentioning. Got a suggestion here on Iboats to switch the frequency from 6 to 11. That made a world of difference. I have had very few disconnects since then.

Re: Internet Connection Problems.....

Mark, Just a thought.....
Have you tried assigning static IP's for your computers?? You would have to program the router to cancel DHCP. Go into the Network settings for each computer, click on the NIC,slide down to the TCP/IP entry, and assign an IP address in the range of 10.0.0.X, where X=2 THRU 254. I would try making my first computer 10.0.0.100, the next computer 10.0.0.101 ect. Click in the Subnet mask, Windows will fill this number in for you. Make the Gateway IP the same as the router (10.0.0.1). Enter this same IP (10.0.0.1) for the Primary DNS entry. Click OK to save your settings.

Setting up your computers with static IP's makes things much easier if you were to do any specific port forwarding in the router. Setting up IP cameras or any P2P programs is a snap when you know where each machine is in your Lan. Troubleshooting connectivity issues are easier to sort out too.

BTW, you don't HAVE to cancel DHCP in your router to assign static IP's. Log into the router and have a look at the DHCP range that is already set by default. For arguments sake, lets say it's set to hand out IP's starting at 10.0.0.2 THRU 10.0.0.50. Assign your computers with a static IP address OUTSIDE of this range. Example: 10.0.0.20 =No Good. 10.0.0.51=OK :D

Edit: Woops, after looking at the router sheets, it looks like the you may have to disable DHCP in the router afterall, the router uses all available IP's when DHCP is turned on.

Re: Internet Connection Problems.....

I the static IP's idea in mind. Today everything but the phone service is still working. I am beginning to think that Sprint may be having switch problems, or at least taking the switch out of service for a while causing me to lose connection. Some of the info from the Cisco 804 indicates the condition and status of the actual copper wire circuit itself. If it is up, down, bound, what service it is bound with, etc. So the next time I lose connection for no reason, I know to check BRI status.

BTW, my house is all hard wired. I didn't like the wireless setups from a security point of view, and wired runs a full 10 times faster than wireless (under load).
