Hello,

I have been an avid reader of the Merc forum for the last year and a half. However, my old 1972 3 cylinder Merc 650 "Tower of Turd" threw a rod two weekends ago and I have decided to replace it with a Johnson (1989 90hp), primarily to see just what the difference is between the two designs. The Johnsons seem to be fairly serviceable under the cowling and the reputation of the OMC outboards from the pre-ficht era seems to be very good.

So I'm off to read all the old messages now, I just wanted to introduce myself.

Re: introduction

Well...welcome to the J/Rude forum then, Jeff.

I have an 86' 90hp Johnny on the back of my StarCraft SuperSport. Ecentually the same block, bore and stroke. I rebuilt it when I first got it, put in a set of Boyesen reeds and proped it out for 6k rpm, WOT. That was about 6 years ago. It has OMS fuel/oil pump....what they originally called VRO.

It runs great and hasn't given me any trouble. I'm sure you will like yours.

Ok, fantastic! I know you from the Merc forums and we're both in SFL, also.

Eli - welcome aboard over here. Nice to see you left the dark side. LOL, just kidding -- couldn't help myself.

You'll like the motor. Old school and very reliable. Just holler if ya need help. Lots of very willing and able bodies here.
