Hi guys,
I came across this forum looking for some information for my new to me boat. I have a new to me 1979(I believe, I'll have to check) Sterncraft deck boat with a 165hp inline 6. I don't have any good pictures at the moment but I will get some up tomorrow. The boat spent most of its life in west TX and now will live the rest of its days in Austin. The PO says he paid someone to go through the whole boat about 6 years ago and get everything in good, running order. After that year he parked it and it has been sitting under a carport for the last 5.
I am slowly making my way through the mass of information on this forum but in the meantime I'm going to ask some stupid questions to get things started. I don't know the S/N of the engine, I'll look tomorrow. The S/N for the OD is 3852615.
First, y'all are smarter than I am. How do I change the oil on this thing? I can fee the drain plug at the very bottom but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get something under there to catch it. Do most people pump it out from the dipstick or what?
Also, tomorrow I'm going to pull the OD and start looking it over. The things to look for are the u-joints, replace the impeller, change the gear oil, lube the prop shaft, and what else? Can the engine be run without the OD?
Next I was going to replace all of the bellows since it's been sitting outside. They sell the "transom rebuild kit" or something for like $120 and it has gaskets and a bunch of other things in there too. Do I need this or can I just buy individual bellows? Anything else I need to do here?
When it comes time to put the OD back in do I need the alignment tool? It seems like nothing would be shifting if I just pull the driveshaft out and then put it back in.
What else from here? I'm home on spring break for two weeks and would like to get this lake ready so I can hit it as soon as I get home.
I saw the website that has the manuals on it but I don't know how to make it pull up my S/N. Can anyone tell me in very simple words how to do that? Maybe if someone has a link to download them too that would be even better.
Thank for reading and answering my dumb questions.
