Introductions and questions

Hi guys,

I came across this forum looking for some information for my new to me boat. I have a new to me 1979(I believe, I'll have to check) Sterncraft deck boat with a 165hp inline 6. I don't have any good pictures at the moment but I will get some up tomorrow. The boat spent most of its life in west TX and now will live the rest of its days in Austin. The PO says he paid someone to go through the whole boat about 6 years ago and get everything in good, running order. After that year he parked it and it has been sitting under a carport for the last 5.

I am slowly making my way through the mass of information on this forum but in the meantime I'm going to ask some stupid questions to get things started. I don't know the S/N of the engine, I'll look tomorrow. The S/N for the OD is 3852615.

First, y'all are smarter than I am. How do I change the oil on this thing? I can fee the drain plug at the very bottom but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get something under there to catch it. Do most people pump it out from the dipstick or what?

Also, tomorrow I'm going to pull the OD and start looking it over. The things to look for are the u-joints, replace the impeller, change the gear oil, lube the prop shaft, and what else? Can the engine be run without the OD?

Next I was going to replace all of the bellows since it's been sitting outside. They sell the "transom rebuild kit" or something for like $120 and it has gaskets and a bunch of other things in there too. Do I need this or can I just buy individual bellows? Anything else I need to do here?

When it comes time to put the OD back in do I need the alignment tool? It seems like nothing would be shifting if I just pull the driveshaft out and then put it back in.

What else from here? I'm home on spring break for two weeks and would like to get this lake ready so I can hit it as soon as I get home.

I saw the website that has the manuals on it but I don't know how to make it pull up my S/N. Can anyone tell me in very simple words how to do that? Maybe if someone has a link to download them too that would be even better.

Thank for reading and answering my dumb questions.

suck the oil out through the dipstick, the tube on that engine most likely wont go to the bottom of the pan so you will have to use a small tube to do it - home inporovement stores sell em

the serial number for the engine should be stamed on a tag on the fron the the intake/ehaust manifold, front right hand side of the engine above the alternator, if you cant find it i would think manual #2 or #3 is what you need, just a guess tho

you will need the manual for changing out the bellows, etc... - there are a lot of folks to help here too

even if you dont need to change the alignment, you need to check it every time the drive is off and once a season during routine maintenance, you can get one on ebay

take a look at the "adults only" sticky at the top of the forum page, LOTS of GREAT info there

and, welcome iboats

Thank you. I looked for the data tag this morning and it appears it is missing. I can see where it used to be but there isn't anything left. I'm guessing the service manual for my outdrive will tell me basically the entire rebuild procedure? I got mine off this morning and it's going to need a good going through.

There are mud dauber nests all through the water channels as far as I can see. Will these hurt anything going through or should I try to get creative and pull them out?

While I was flushing out the cooling system I noticed the plug/petcock on the cylinder drain hole was missing. Does anyone know the correct size for a new bolt?

It's not a bolt, it's a pipe plug. Should be 1/4 NPT (pipe thread). Any auto parts or hardware store will have them in brass.

Next, I have the upper and lower unit split to change the impeller. On the very front of the lower, where it looks like the gear shift is, there is a depression that is full of dirt. Is this an oil or water passage or anything? I've spent about 30 minutes digging with a screwdriver and can't seem to get all of the dirt out.

Yes that front cavity runs quite a ways down. There is small drain hole at the bottom of it visible from outside, front starboard side I believe. You can poke that hole with a small wire or drill bit in your hand. Try a vacuum with a small attachment to suck out that gunk, it can take a while. to get it all out.

Welcome aboard! ;)

Welcome to the club. Definitely follow the advice you've been given. You do need the proper manuals (engine and outdrive) and an alignment tool. Check on UTube for videos on changing bellows and on checking alignment. Since the boat had been sitting in the Texas heat for five years, I'd recommend you check and probably change all the coolant flow hoses. In addition, check the rubber hose for the fuel line. Make sure it's ethanol compliant. Good luck with your 'new' boat. Hy
