Re: IPhone..Worth It?

I have the Ipod touch 2g. It can do all the same things the phone can, except make cellular calls (notice I didn't say phone calls, because it CAN make those using a wi-fi connection). It is like a tiny laptop computer. I have wifi at my house, at my buddies house and at school, the 3 places it ever goes so it's like an iphone to me. I never call anyone while in the car when I did own a phone, so it being useless in the car is irrelevant to me. It has an accelerometer that is very accurate that can be used as a leveler, as a dyno for a vehicle, really cool stuff. And it only is about 170 bucks, one time. The internet is free, but the calls, if you want to use that feature, will cost you a small amount. Its neat because I have an ebay app which lets me do anything ebay much easier than trying to use the website. I also have a weather channel app which shows a gorgeous moving radar which can be zoomed in to street level, I also have a free unlimited texting app that I can text anyone with a cell phone totally free and unlimited (and they can text me back too of course), a resistor color app, just set the colors of the bands of any resistor and it will tell you the ohm reading and tolerance of that resistor, a discover channel app which loads the guide and small snippits of each show in the discovery channel, a mapquest app which gets you maps just like the website does, pandora internet radio app which streams unlimited free music of your favorite genre or even specific artist, a web md app to help you with health issues, all totally and completely free. Oh yea, it also does youtube videos with sound and it's an Ipod, so it does music too.

I dont recommend the phone because of the cost of the contract. But the ipod touch, with wifi being free and everywhere these days, is a much better deal. The ipod touch 2g is also about 1/3 to 1/2 the weight and bulk of the iphone. But its the same screen size.

Interesting "waterinthefuel", I went with the iPhone. Having to different gadgets to keep up with is too much for me. And still the only reason for the iPhone/iPod Touch for me was access to the apps. Otherwise there are lots of other choices.

Here here, these gadget phones are a huge waste of money for what is basically "bling"...worthless bling after two years at that.

I wish they would concentrate on antenna/reception quality and battery life instead of all this crap on the phones. Maybe I am getting old and should get a jitterbug.:D

Yep I basically want a phone that I can call people on if I need to speak to them or vice versa.
The rest is bells and whistles to me.

I agree, BUT, the information that can be placed in your hand is worth dealing with the worthless hype.

Here is the example I continue to use. AquaLights, a new iPhone app, can identify the nav lights of any vessel. That's a big deal to have identify a RAM (Restricted in Ability to Maneuver) in the pitch black dark. Or a Mine Sweeper. Or a Submarine.

And there will be one for identifying fog signals soon.

There are nav charts like iNavX.
Tide overlays like Aye Tides.
Weatherforcast.
Wind Speed.
etc. etc.

Lots of info in the palm of your hand. And all WHILE you are talking on the phone.

Don't come across many of these on Lake St Clair !!! or the other lakes I frequent.

Re: IPhone..Worth It?

Since I started this thread I thought I would give an update. I have had the phone for 2 weeks including a week in Maui. I absolutely love it. The GPS features came in handy in Maui finding restaurants, other businesses and just getting us around. Being able to get my email while I was on the road was great too. I love the app that allows you to scan barcodes and have it look up prices on the internet. Just getting to know the phone. What an incredible device!

And for those that say it is just an Itouch with a phone added, please explain how an iTouch is going to do anything when you are on a remote beach with no WiFi. There is also no GPS! I love that fact that I have both devices in one unit. I have an ITouch I now need to sell!

One thing I did buy and totally reccomend is a batteyr pack that allows me to charge the phone around 3 times before it needs to be charged. Very useful especially on an airplane. I watched a couple movies on my flight and the phone would have gone dead if I wasn't able to charge it.
