Re: Is 50 HP too weak for 15' Bayliner??

Brice,
I have a 1981 16' Tempest bowrider with a
1981 Evinrude 50HP. I could only get 30mph with one person in boat. Blew that motor up and put on a 1984 60HP Johnson. With two people and a little gear I can get 32mph. If I put 3 people in it with fishing gear and a tube, speed drops to
23mph WOT. Power is not there for skiing anyone over 200 lbs. and it has trouble making tubing fun. If you plan on using your boat for skiing or tubing or carrying three or four people on it, move up to either a 3 cyl 70HP or a 90HP.
You will definitely enjoy the boat a whole lot more.

I think a better question would be "Is a Bayliner strong enough to hold a 50hp engine?"
:D :D ;)
My apologies. I was out of line and deserve the wrap over the knuckles.
Good choice Brice. I have a 16 1/2 foot Lund (aluminum) and with a 75HP mercury it will go about 37-40 with 1 or 2 people add 4 hitting 30-32 with max load of six people it goes about 20. She'll barely plane. My max HP is 90 and I'd love to get it in a few years. All speeds via GPS. It does get crowded with 4 or more people but easily manageable.

I have a 16.5 Quantium fish and ski with a 2003 4 stroke 70 hp. I have 13 inch pitch prop and a 19 inch pitch prop. Via the gps I get 28 mph with my wife and me in the boat and a cooler.

With the 19 inch pitch prop I get 36 mph via the gps. It is way slow on the hole shot with the 19 inch and the rpms are too low. I have a 17 inch on the way.

I hope that helps.

Hey Brice,
One other thing to keep in mind when upgrading your motor. The older models, pre 80's
I am talking about, are a lot heavier than newer ones. I tried putting a 1976 85HP Evinrude on my boat, but could only get 35 mph out of it. The motor was way too heavy and the gain too little.
Try to go as new as you can afford.

Also, pre 1983 engines were powerhead rated, not prop rated.
