bill, thanks for your input, i really didn't understand what the point of using a higher octane gas, my dad is a diesel mechanic but doesn't totally understand gas or outboard engines

All that I meant was that the actual "number" indicating octane does not have anything to do with additives or cleaning ability, it is simply, as ted6555 said, a measurement used in cracking fuel and means that, that fuel will withstand more heat. That is not to say that the higher octanes don't have the cleaners and additives because I'm sure they do, but those additives and cleaners do not add or take away from octane, they are simply what they are called, additives. And in my "opinion" those additives don't provide any benefit to an outboard(2 stroke),with no injectors or valves, where you are always burning oil as well, and no gas additive is going to clean that carbon off. The higher octane itself won't hurt anything but is not neccesary.
