I have a 1989 40 hp Evinrude, electric start, remote control. Model TE40ELCEC (Tracker moter). The overheat warning buzzer, located at the remote control is shot, and OMC wants $68+ for a replacement which I think is a bit steep. Does anybody know of an aftermarket unit at a more reasonable price? This is a VRO2 moter, I'm not sure if it has the SLOW system. I'm a newbie to this forum and you guys sound like you're very knowledgeable. Thanks in advance for your help.

Why do you suspect it's bad?

The reason I ask is that I thought I had the same problem one time, and it turned out to be something totally different.

This unit is very badly rusted. I removed it and connected it directly to the battery with jumper wires, correct polarity, and it manages a "click". I am sure the horn is bad.

Yes -- 12V electronic horns are available at Radio Shack for just a couple of bucks. They are about the size of a 50 cent piece. I use one on my live well pump-out pump so I don't forget to turn it off.

As long as water and air and wiring coonections aren't a factor, the Radio Shack unit will work just fine.

I bought one off ebay for around $15 and it's one of the darn radio shack buzzers. When I opened the envelope I was all DOH!!

I bought Radio Shack part 273-068, "4-28VDC.2 Way Piezo Buzzer", and it works fine. It has 1/4" male spade terminals which match my wire harness. I plugged it in and it played. Cost $10.05 with NJ sales tax, which sure beats over $68 for OMC part. The package says it is waterproof, we'll see. Thanks again for the help. I'll be back with other threads as I have a few more gremlins in this motor. Yes, I'll order a repair manual, which is best source?
