I bought this boat and came with electronic ignitor,
I am having problems with idle after run wot for 5 min. runs rough and dies Wait ten minutes and starts right up runs a little in idle and dies
I have one spark tester bulb, I don't see spark after the distribution
Rebuild the Carb last season and open again now check the float 14mm 27mm and didn't have 1 grain of sand inside
Should I go back to points? and try it

Flame thrower 3 ohms coil

mercruiser 140 3.0 1986 alpha 1

Thanks

I have one spark tester bulb,

I'm not sure what that is, but watching a nice blue spark jump to ground off a screwdriver blade is the ticket.

sounds like some voltmeter checks are in order at the coil and see if it has power

then you can disconnect the coil and test it with an ohmmeter (out of the boat)

If its a Pertronix, 50% chance its bad, the early ones will burn out if the ignition is left on too long with engine not running.

I would think you would want to find a way to verify your tester before you go too far. You say it runs at WOT for 5 minutes and then quits. I would find a way to check for spark while it's running so you know what you're seeing. Then after it quits, try the same method to check for spark. Let's face it - if the engine is running then it has spark!

From what I've seen, Pertronix doesn't do a very good at providing troubleshooting information. Here's a link to Hot Spark that may give you an indication of where to see if it has shorted out: http://www.hot-spark.com/Troubleshooting.pdf

Besides going through the checklist in the Adults only section: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430. You might want to really take a look at the fuel filter and vent. To check the vent, loosen the fuel filler cap to see if that helps it stay running.

Re: Is Electronic Ignitor goes bad?

Thanks for all the replies.

I have one of those spark tester (like a bulb), and after the engine dies, I try to crank and the bulb is not as bright, if i put it direct to the coil gets brighter, but nothing like while is running good.
I merger the voltage at the coil, sometimes goes as low as 6v, and I tried to jump with 12v direct from the battery and still wouldn't start.

The coil feel hot .

Maybe I am leaving the key on too long

The link is very good, I think I have a lot more to test before any conclusion!!
