Is F225 right for me?

We have a 2250 HydaSports center console - came with 99 Ficht 225 engine. Boat is/was very quick with this 2-stroke engine, but I need more dependable power - one tow bill was enough. Planning on F225. Two questions: 1. Is this engine going to be quick enough out of the hole to pull a skier? and 2. Is it too heavy? It's not beyond the rated weight for the boat, but I wonder about the difference between the 2-stroke and four stoke. I appreciate any suggestions you all may have.

Honda BF225, Suzuki DF225 and Mercury 225 SaltWater 4-stroke is about the same weight.<br />How much weight is Your present Evinrude Ficht 225 hp 2-stroke? 500 lb/225 kg?<br /><br />I use a Yamaha F115 (2003) myself in a 19 ft DC.

You might find it a lot better to stay with the new Bombardier motors for your HydraSport. That way you can keep your controls, cables, and your wiring and gauges, instead of spending extra money to remove those items then having to install new Yamaha items, which are very expensive. The Bombardier built Evinrudes are head and shoulders better and more reliable than your '99 version made by OMC. Since Bombardier took over Evinrude and Johnson, their products are next to bulletproof.<br /><br />Also you will get better performance with a new Evinrude than you did with your OMC 1999 225hp. The newer engines have much more torque for water skiing and the engine displacement is 10% larger than your old motor, 3.3L vs. 3.0L or 200 cu. in. vs. 180 cu. in.<br /><br />Some folks are not happy with the 4-stroke Yamaha's acceleration and mid-range power.<br /><br />The new Evinrudes are as quiet as the 4-strokes and a lot more powerful. They also come with a full non-declining 3 year warranty. Read about them and the boat tests with them in recent boating magazines.

I've got the F150 on a 20 ft Polar Center Console weighing around 2250 lbs. I am happy with the hole shot and have pulled people around on a tube without any problem. I had it out on Lake Ontario earlier this summer and driving solo with about 1/2 tank of gas was able to open it up between 40-45 mph per GPS.<br /><br />I don't think you will have any problem with the F225 moving your boat.<br /><br /><br />Kevin

The Bombardier built Evinrudes are head and shoulders better and more reliable than your '99 version made by OMC. Since Bombardier took over Evinrude and Johnson, their products are next to bulletproof.<br />

While there seem to be signs that Bombardier is not going to repeat the early Ficht fiasco, I think it's MUCH too early to say that Johnson/Evinrude are bulletproof.

I have a 2003 F225 on my 22 ft Grady White W/A cuddy mounted on a bracket. I'm pleased with the hole shot and also pulled people on a tube with no problem. Top speed 40mph per GPS and great on gas. I think you will have no problem moving your boat and you'll be amazed at how quiet they are. <br /><br />Good luck
