Is getting almost an instant cooling water discharged (30-sec) indicating my thermostat is bad or is that a bypass working? I feel the instant water is causing my 1970 35 HP Chrysler to not idle well in cool weather (which caused me to test the working stat to see if it was in the sys). This causes constant starts and coughs in my opinion. The coughs appear to be causing a low Eng knock that goes away with the cough. I might hear the low knock if I idle too hard in a barrel when I bring it down.

Is there an easy way to see the connector rod to crank connection? Such as, on my chainsaw I can see and feel the connection by removing the Carb (which looks too deep on this eng).

Otherwise, how can I improve the cold water idling that is only a problem until it warms vs setting the idle too high? Thanks In Advance! jow

You can check out your thermostat by removing it from the engine, toss it into a pot of water on the stove with along with a thermometer, and verify the water temp when the thermostat begins to open - should be around 150 F. The cough and knock may be due to other factors such as idle mixture and timing to name a couple. In order to get some sort of a look at the big-ends, you would have to remove the carb and intake manifold, and even then, you wouldn't get a great view. If you had a failed bearing, the debris would have to go somewhere, and I would expect the engine to have exhibited far more serious issues than what you have described.

Thanks stubtail! I am flipping coins as to what to do with this boat now since it has serve more than well. It was to be a starter in 1985 and I realized quickly that it was all I needed for my level of fishing. Now it?s a matter of staying safe w/o spending any unnecessary money or time. I have had my fun but need to stay active.

I have checked the thermostat and would like to keep the idle speed down. I?m not following you on idle mixture because it runs fine after it?s warm. It's this early fishing in North TX because later it will be worm before leaving home. What are the tricks the year-round boaters use to warm-up in the cold? jow

Im not to familiar with your motor year and all, but do you have a fast idle that can be set using the shift lever. May be one that you pull outward on the lever and then forward or back.. this gives you the rpms without it being in gear.

Thanks bentle! No fast idle except me bumping as much acceleration in the start position as possible. The cough while cold might be the real issue. What causes the cough? That usually causes it to die but starts instantly to do it again until it worms (and no problems afterwards that I have noticed). jow

Compression & spark test come to mind. Bad reed petals could be another. Points if you have them. A short in the electrical wires on the motor is possible. Heck really if you can live with the cough then get out there and get fishing. I hope jerry or frank jump in here and have some better answers for you than I have.

Is there a less rubber primer bulb option as simple but more metal or plastic vs poor rubber?

1. I changed the fuel line, inline-filter and primer bulb as PM this season (since 1984). The bulb split basically at all flexing seems on the 1st fishing trip yesterday. I switched back to the old that works.
2. A positive, the engine, started and idled good with out coughing (with the bad bulb) in the 80 Deg weather. I feel the leak could have contributed to the present cold start/cough and poor to no idling initial below 70 Deg (but not the real cause). jow

If there is any other type of primmer bulb other than the rubber one then im not aware of it.
if the primmer bulb is unable to hold fuel after primming it up then this could have been your problem or more to say that it was probably letting a bit of air in as well as not holding the fuel.
