Re: Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Does anyone have a manual on this type of motor for routine things?

First, welcome to the iboats.com forum. I think it is the single best resource for recreational boaters. The experts here, which I am not, can help you with any issue involving your boat, motor and trailer. Most forum members recommend the "factory" service manual to properly maintain and/or repair an outboard motor. While I agree and do have some, I also think you will be well served with a non-factory manual which will help you learn and ask more informed questions. I have been fooling with outboards for 50+ years and search the forums daily in an attempt to share what I have experienced AND to learn more. The link below will get you to a free online public library that has lots of manuals scanned and saved including one that covers your motor.

LOGIN as directed, then drill down to: Small Engine, Marine/Boat Motors, Evinrude/Johnson, Outboard 40HP (1965-1968) and Condensed Service Data.

FYI, there are a couple of errors on the first page under "Lubrication" you need to be aware of!

First, it states to mix the oil&gas at 1/8pt per gallon. That is incorrect! It should be 1/6pt per gallon to get the recommended 50:1 mix. This rate actually results in 48:1 but that is what you get by putting one pint of TCW3 oil into a six gallon portable fuel tank.

The second error is the statement to use Type C gear oil in the lower unit gearcase. That is only correct for electric shift gearcases! Manual shift gearcases use regular outboard motor gear lube and the two should not be mixed.

Good luck with that great old motor!

Re: Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Sorry bad day
Still if you have to ask that question, should you really be wrenching on an old motor?

I'd have to ask you a question. What makes you an authority to ask that question about another person without not knowing a thing about the person? The only wrenching with any of his questions was to possibly remove a whale tale. Can anybody that has removed a nut and/or bolt in the past answer that question? Are they worthy of doing so or do they need to seek a certified marine mechanic somewhere?

BTW, there are 4 strokes outboards from that era, even diesels. Heck, even Evinrude had a 4 stroke in the early 1900's. Maybe you can explain to us how to tell if a diesel from that era is 2 stroke or 4 stroke? And if 2 stroke, do you need to mix oil in the fuel? Do you need to mix oil in the early Evinrude 4 stroke?

You really don't need to answer any of this, just hoping these questions make you think about your judgement and assumptions.

For all we know jreid could be a top certified auto mechanic.
But never messed with outboards before.

Re: Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Everyone I appreciate all of your helpful post. I will be posting more questions in the future and I hope that nice people are willing to help. To answer a few question from some people. I have never worked on a outboard motor and as far as it goes I have not even looked in the motor yet. I figured I would ask before I ever went and got gas considering I have never worked on a boat motor. I gave up motocross last year and I need a new hobby. I have experience working on 4 stroke and 2 stroke dirt bike engines and from what I have seen online it doesn't look any harder. I will be posting pictures of my boat and my restoration as it comes along I have already repaired the trailor and will be getting to the hull this weekend. Still I appreciate everyones help along the way thanks.

Re: Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Sorry guys, I am a member of the "Preservation of Old Two Stroke Outboard Society"
4 stroke pratice should be on a lawnmower and 2 stroke pratice on a weedeater.

I actually felt I gave him sound advice by recommending he get a newer outboard.

If I could resurrect every old 2 stroke outboard, I would.
Do you really think I am the only one that thought that way?
No, I am the only one that said it publicly.

Now the mods wanted this to die out but some wouldn't let it.
Again, when I typed that I was having a bad day. Sorry for coming across so blunt. But in the end, nothing I said was bad enough to be editted.

So to the OP,
Sorry I came across so harsh.
You have to understand I love old 2 strokes and have a deep respect for them. I hate to see bad things happen to them in the hands of a novice.
For the engines sake, I am glad that you had the foresight to ask the question.

Re: Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Just under a year ago I had zero experience with outboards. My background to that point had been cars, lawnmower, dirtbikes, atvs, go-carts, ...etc , 2 stroke and 4 stroke. All as a hobbyist/weekend warrior. My welcome to the antique outboard world has been great. Luckily I met a very senior and respected member of that community who saw enough in my mechanical abilities not to pass judgment due to my lack of experience. He has been a great mentor. I have seen others go through a more rough road then I traveled.

BTW, My last MX bike was a 91 KX500, heavily modified. I swear it left loosened gravel just idling down a gravel road on every stroke of the cylinder.

Oh!
My lawnmower is a 2 stroke. My weedeater is electric
