Re: Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke
First, welcome to the iboats.com forum. I think it is the single best resource for recreational boaters. The experts here, which I am not, can help you with any issue involving your boat, motor and trailer. Most forum members recommend the "factory" service manual to properly maintain and/or repair an outboard motor. While I agree and do have some, I also think you will be well served with a non-factory manual which will help you learn and ask more informed questions. I have been fooling with outboards for 50+ years and search the forums daily in an attempt to share what I have experienced AND to learn more. The link below will get you to a free online public library that has lots of manuals scanned and saved including one that covers your motor.

LOGIN as directed, then drill down to: Small Engine, Marine/Boat Motors, Evinrude/Johnson, Outboard 40HP (1965-1968) and Condensed Service Data.
FYI, there are a couple of errors on the first page under "Lubrication" you need to be aware of!
First, it states to mix the oil&gas at 1/8pt per gallon. That is incorrect! It should be 1/6pt per gallon to get the recommended 50:1 mix. This rate actually results in 48:1 but that is what you get by putting one pint of TCW3 oil into a six gallon portable fuel tank.
The second error is the statement to use Type C gear oil in the lower unit gearcase. That is only correct for electric shift gearcases! Manual shift gearcases use regular outboard motor gear lube and the two should not be mixed.
Good luck with that great old motor!
Does anyone have a manual on this type of motor for routine things?
