Is it my Stator?

I have a 1993 Merc outboard 175HP carbed of course.
I bypassed my oil pump, and mix oil straight into my tank
My engine will not go past 3500 rpm in the water in gear.
It gets up thee and maxes out.
In neutral, I get max rpm easy.
I changed the plugs, the wires, the fuel filter, water separator. I disconnected the warning sensors.
Someone mentioned to me it could be the stator.
I also read there are 2 separate coils, a low speed and high speed. What does the stator do as a function, and could it be my problem?

Well, it could be the stator but it could also be loss of a cylinder or two. What it does in Neutral only tells you that at least two (out of six) cylinders are making power.

Could be lost compression. Do a compression check. All cylinders should be in a 15% range.

Could be restriction in fuel supply. Try pumping the primer when it maxes out.

Could be a bad carb. Try squirting premix fuel into each carb when it is maxed.

Could be lost spark. Try pulling each plug when at idle. If idle does not drop, no power in that cylinder.

It could be trim or too much prop pitch also.

You need to check the spark gap on each cylinder using a spark gap tester... $10 at any auto parts store.. You should see at least a 7/16" gap at idle.

I bet you have lost spark on a few cylinders.... Will it run at idle on the garden hose?

But this could be a fuel delivery problem also... But the spark test is the easiest to check first..
