It was me that posted the Old timers wood sealant recipe. Here it is again. 1 part Boiled Linseed Oil, 2 Parts Mineral Spirits, 1 Part Polyurethane with UV protection or Marine Varnish. Make sure and dispose of any saturated rags properly. They WILL have a tendency spontaneously combust!!!!

Hey WOG sorry about that...Thanks much...your original post just said linseed oil and wanted to make sure...Was originally going with 2 part epoxy but cost is unbelievable...like your idea better....whats the best way to apply...paint roller, brush etc...thinking this is going to be pretty thin mixture...will I need more than one coat?? again appreciate the help....

Roller! Put it on HEAVY! You want it to Pool on the surface and then wipe off excess. Use a brush on the edges and really let it soak into the edges. MINIMUM of 72 hours dry time. 96 hrs if temps are chilly. Since it's Oil based it HAS to be dry before you can Paint. Get it in Direct Sunlight and Wind, as much as possible.

Yep ! Stole it from the master. Remember, it will take 3-4 days to dry. Longer in cooler weather.

On the poly/varnish make sure it says "UV protection" and it is NOT "water based" !

Hey another question about installing the carpet...Dap Wildwood was recommended and Im sure it works great...One of the local Lund Searay dealers locally does boat rebuilding and they only use contact cement...believe Dap also has contact cement...Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of using contact cement versus the adhesive??? Many thanks

When you use contact cement you get ONE CHANCE to put it down. When it sticks, IT'S STUCK. With the carpet glue, you can usually move it around a bit before it sets up.

If you go to the resto forum homepage, it's listed at the top, in a shaded area of threads. As a 'stickie' it's sort of a post-it note, that is usually info that most people using the resto forum will find helpful or interesting. So it's STUCK at the top of the list in that shaded area. It doesn't move down the list as additional posts are made in threads.

Welcome to iBoats. First you don't have to use Marine Plywood. Most don't. A good grade of Ext. Plywood will suffice. Once it's properly sealed it will last for decades if maintained properly. If you decided to go to the expense of the MG plywood you still need to seal it. It will still rot. They do make Plywood for Pontoon boat decks that's hard to find, expensive, uses nasty chemicals according to some people and is guaranteed not to rot for 40 years supposedly and does not need to be sealed supposedly.

3/4" Marine Treated Decking

I have a dumb question, is exterior grade and pressure treated plywood the same? I looked at exterior grade plywood and it always says pressure treated in the details and it make me hesitate due to the interactions between pressure treated chemicals and the aluminum. I will leave it you experts to lead me. I have a 1448 aluminum Jon boat (fresh water only) that I am putting some decking on, I plan on using 2 by 2 or 2 x 4 framing and sealing all of it with epoxy sealer and I will place some of the foam boards in the bottom. What type of fasteners should I use for framing? Should they be different for attaching wood to wood and wood to the aluminum boat? The boat will be kept in covered storage when not in use. Sorry I have so many questions but I am new to aluminum boats and doing the decking myself.
