Is it worth fixing? Merc 50HP Prop strike

I bought a small 14' fiberglass runabout from the "late 1970's" with a Mercury 50HP on it three years ago. After the first year, it was serviced by a dealer, who said it was in good condition. 18 Months ago, my wife loaned the boat to a friend and he "Hit something" under the water damaging the propellor. Two of the blades were really bent. He said the engine made a "funny noise" coming back in. It has not been run since. My question is about how much work and expense this will be to fix. Is there probably a lot of damage to an old engine or is there a possibility it could be a quick, reasonable priced repair? I know nothing about outboards and am wondering if it is even worth the expense of starting a repair. Is it worth it?

With 2 blades really bent its going to make funny noises. If it seems to shift OK, put another prop on it and give it a try.

The "funny noise" could be about anything. I highly suspect the prop made the noise rubbing on the housing. If the prop shaft is bent or shifting in/out of gear stops/starts the noise you could have bigger issues.

Test one... Compression test. Test two, what does the drive oil look like? Is it milky, black or is there filings in the case? Maybe I should even go so far as to ask an even more important question. IS there oil in the drive?

Take the prop to a prop dealer. They will tell you if it's repairable or not. Even if it's worth it to repair or cheaper to but new/used.

If it were mine , I would pull the prop, check drive oil and change, put muffs on it and try to fire it. If it runs do compression check to make sure everything is ok, If all is good go prop shopping.

My wife wouldnt be loaning my rig to anyone! You must be one nice guy! Throw a good prop on. You'd be surprised to find nothing wrong.
