Might be able to get a 40hp motor that?s running and was wondering if it turns out to be no good whether I could use it for parts on my 1962 28hp RX-10 motor. Also is it possible to make the 40hp motor into a short shaft

Thanks Kevin

Well, some parts will interchange, but many won't. Obviously, the horsepower difference means many differing parts, as well as the changes made through the years. Most of the differences are in the powerhead.

Yes, you can remove the extension. You will need a short drive shaft, shift rod, and deal with the water tube. Much depends on whether the 40 is a factory long shaft, or if it was converted with an extension kit.

After removing extension would it be possible to bolt on lower unit of the 28 hp and its drive shaft to the 40 hp without having to change any thing else?

Yes......IF. If it is a factory short shaft converted to long with a kit. However, if it is a factory long shaft, the water tube will be too long. Not to worry, you can cut 5" off of it. Hard part is getting up inside the housing to do it. You'll figure some way to do it.
