Is Locktite Compatible With Nylock Nuts?

I'm fastening some things with SS bolts and nylock nuts. If I put Locktite or similar compound on the threads will it compromise the locking of the nylock nuts? Will it prevent the SS bolt an nut from corroding together? Any benefits, or a waste of time or harmful?

My only question is why?

Nylocks are pretty bullet proof if you do it correctly, I can't see a reason to use locktite on a nylock nut...I don't believe it would be harmful, but I just don't see the need to do it, for me it would be a waste of time.

It will ruin the nylon. As long as you use brand new nuts, they wont go anywhere. A bit of anti-seize would be a good idea though.

LockTite drys into a crystalline form, sort of like sand in the threads. I would venture to guess it would damage the nylon if the nylon was forced over the dried LockTite. If thread sealing is what your after, then use pipe dope and new Nylock nuts.
I doubt if there would be any chemical issue between nylon and LockTite though.

Why indeed. I have never heard of a nylock coming loose. Overkill in my book.
Glad You're using stainless.

If you are worried about a nylock coming loose you should just drill and safety wire a regular nut, or use a regular or crimped nut and use locktite on that. The reason not to use a nylock is for clearance or strength. Usually a regular nut tightened properly will suffice but I have had bolts and nuts on a rally car come loose even with locktite and proper torque. I have a hard time envisioning anything on a normal boat that would get that kind of vibration though.

Been building nitro powered R/C cars, boats and trucks for years. You'd never find anything that vibrated more or ran a harder life than a 2-stroke nitromethane R/C truck. INSANE vibrations to say the very least.

Nylock nuts go on w/out Locktite. If you need to remove a part, you use the blue locktite. To set them permanently, use the red locktite. Check the labels -- I always do in case I have it reversed. I've use locktite on simple screws that screw into nylon parts by accident. Well, that was a mistake -- the nylon was weakened. Don't do it.

Locktite is for metal to metal applications. Use the one that can be removed. Ain't nothing on my Scarab that vibrates like my R/C nitro engines. Nylon parts and nuts always hold up. Where metal meets metal, use the right locktite type product.:)
