Hi'

I just bought a used Mercury 20hp. I have a Tohatsu dealer near by.

Can I use a Tohatsu Remote Control Box for my Mercury 20ELPT ?
We know that Tohatsu is making all the small engine for Mercury. So almost all part are compatible and the Tohatsu part cost less.
There is a 14 pin cable coming out of my 2010 Mercury outboard, can it be plug on a Tohatsu remote control ?
Is Mercury and Tohatsu compatible with remote control box ?
I think that the part number for the Mercury remote box is 881170A14, but I cannot find the equivalent part number in Tohatsu.
Thanks

Hi,

The control box of Tohatsu is $ 350 (Canadian $$$)
Mercury control box is $ 470

But I just learned that Mercury has a plug with " 14 pin" and Tohatsu " 8 pin"
The adaptor costs $ 100 :grumpy:

Tohatsu and Mercury engine are made in the same factory in Japan and are almost identical at 99 %, but to justify the $ 1,000 difference , Mercury has some non- compatible pieces to force us to buy Mercury parts for more $$$ .

Tohatsu, the world second largest manufacturer of engine Outboard , also manufactures all of Nissan motors and small Johnson and Evinrude motor. I do not know who's the largest engine manufacturer in the outboard world , possibly Yamaha .

That' it,

Have a nice week end !!!

Engine fittings and remote box should be about same, try with Tohatsu dealer code 3B7Q84340-2 model RC5B. Tell him you have a Merc 20 and want a Tohatsu compatible remote control, you could even be his client lately.

Does the
" Merc14 pin" and Tohatsu " 8 pin" and $ 100 you talked about, has to deal with engine fittings and remote control. If so, who ever said that installing a remote control box was a cheap installation.

Tohatsu is currently manufacturing engines for Merc, Mariner, Nissan, Evinrude is far way number one, manufactures 400,000 own and rebadged engines a year, more than Yam alone.

Happy Boating
