Hello,

This is my first time on the board and hope you can help.

I have a 1983 9.9 Evinrude used on a small jon boat. Saturday, the water pump malfunctioned, unbehknownst to me, and while running at 3/4 throttle for 6 minutes, the motor ceased up and shut down immediately. It got so hot, the paint on the heat started smoking and turned brown.

Though my mechanic, who has not seen the motor yet, said it will never be the same and it must be entirely rebuilt, I was able to get it started at home. I noticed the water pump still was not working but after a strong squirt up the pee hole, it started working and seems to run fine.

I checked the compression and it was lower than it was 5 years ago, with the top cyl at 94 and the bottom at 108. My understanding is, less than 100 and a variance greater than 10% is bad. I have both problems. Still, it seems to run fine in the backyard, but I have not put it in the lake. IN the meantime, I have sprayed decarbonizer in the carb and on the pistons and am soaking it overnight. Thought this might help clean them up.

I would appreciate your comments. Is this motor a problem waiting to happen? Will it perform poorly on the lake? What can i expect from it?

thank you,
david

Change your water pump and give it a try. Those 9.9s are great engines and hard to break. If you decide not to change the water pump, be sure to take your oars along next rrip out.

Hey Tealboy 1,
SoLittle gives sound advice on changing the water pump. A clogged "peehole" won't cause the motor to overheat. ;)
Backlash
