It's finally coming together, you have a Thomson Cutlass 165 boat. (Note: the engine is not a 165, the boat is)

The engine is a 2.5L 4 cylinder. 120 HP. engine.

If you look on the block just above and aft of the starter, you should find the model and serial number tag.

thanks for replying don s., yes it is getting clearer for the guys who replied to my ?.. i used my fuji camera to take these pics but they were like 2.39mb in size so i had to download some software to shrink them. i have a pic of the boat itself which i will also post when i get it resized....

In this forum, it doesn't matter what boat you have, it's all about the engine and drive.

Now that we know what you have, what exactly is your problem?

PS, would be a real good idea to find the serial number of your engine. That is how you find parts for Mercruiser engines. Things are typically listed for a particular serial number range.

ok guys here is the last of the pics.... ya know i did have a cutlass once but it was an cutlass oldsmobile,,,,lol so with these pics the mystery is really solved.. finally.... oh and see the piece of tape on the stern drive, a rubber plug goes there but one of my kids or the neighbor kid took it out... i was telling a guy in uniontown,ky about it and he'd never heard of a plug like that on a sterndrive. actually all i c in the hole is 2 set screws or adjusting screws. have no clue to their use...

thanks don s. yeah mine didn't have the brass fitting just the plug.. the main problem i'm having is my boat's not wanting to start. i've only had it a few years and have only changed plugs, dist cap and rotor. i cleaned the points somewhat and it tried to start. the gas is last years but put fuel stabilizer in it. which i'm pretty sure does help some but no garauntee it still doesn't attack the carb. i could probably put the points and condensor in but that is all. i have a guy who's going to do it which he has worked on boats for many years.. that's okay but when u want to go boating that's not... i'll just have to wait and he also said he usually has to put points etc.. in 4 cyl in people's boats at least once a year or every 2 years..
thanks for the diagram that was very helpful...

Put in some new points and condenser. Those are parts you replace yearly in the spring to get ready for the boating season.
Then once you have it running check the dwell (not just the point gap with a feeler gauge) then reset the timing.

i have the tune-up kit don s. that's what the only good boat mechanic in town is going to put in and he has all the timing lights etc...... of course i'd like to watch him and maybe learn a little something but i'm pretty sure he works solo.. so i'm getting close to my 3 week wait, that's one dis-advantage of having only 1 good boat meachanic in town... which we do live in a small town...
thanks for your replying and patience, it is well appreciated..
